San Luis Obispo County’s unemployment rate rises

The jobless rate in San Luis Obispo County rose from 10 percent in December to 10.3 percent in January, according to a report released Friday by the California Employment Development Department.

The rate is higher than the national average of 9.4 percent and below the state’s 12.4 percent rate, both which fell in January.

Last month, state education positions fell by 1,100 in San Luis Obispo County. Private sector jobs in hospitality, transportation, finance and retail sectors also declined during January.

Local government employee numbers grew by 23 percent from December to January with an increase of approximately 2,000 jobs.

Baywood/Los Osos CDP         8.0 percent
Cambria CDP                           7.2 percent
Cayucos CDP                           6.0 percent
Paso Robles                            12.2 percent
Grover Beach                         10.1 percent
Lake Nacimiento CDP            10.5 percent
Morro Bay                               8.1 percent
Nipomo CDP                          13.5 percent
Oceano CDP                           18.8 percent
Pismo Beach                         10.5 percent
San Luis Obispo                   11.3 percent
San Miguel CDP                    11.1 percent

Government jobs are not JOBS, they are parasitic opportunities. A J-O-B is what you call it when you create something and someone pays you VOLUNTARILY.

Let’s see… the City of San Luis Obispo’s population has gone up 10% in the last 10 years and the City budget has gone up 4 or 5 times?

Gotta be a misprint, that 2000 new local govt jobs.


You can count on it taking 20 or so of us working stiffs to pay for one govt employee. So 2000 more of them, MUST equate to 40,000 more of us. And I ain’t seeing it.

There is also a long term impact on the high unemployment rate, almost 20% of children in America are living in poverty.


The economy needs to have jobs growing at this rate for awhile for a recovery to be certain.
