Son of Kelly Gearhart dead at 21

Kelly Gearhart

Jake Gearhart, the son of embattled former North County developer Kelly Gearhart, recently died of a drug overdose at a rehab center in the Los Angeles area.

Amid allegations that Kelly Gearhart helped defraud investors out of more than $100 million in an alleged Ponzi scheme, he moved to Wadsworth, Ohio, in 2009. The move occurred shortly after threats of physical violence by an angry investor.

After his father moved away, Jake Gearhart stayed with friends or relatives in San Luis Obispo County. Friends of the family said the cloud over his father and harassment directed at him because of his father’s alleged misdeeds took a toll on the young man.

Workers at the rehab found Jake Gearhart deceased from a heroin overdose on a bathroom floor.

May the young man rest in peace.

Ezekiel 18:18-20

New International Version (NIV)

18 But his father will die for his own sin, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was wrong among his people.

19 “Yet you ask, ‘Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees, he will surely live. 20 The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.

This is truly so sad. No doubt others around him reached out to try and save him from the drug abuse. There are alot of drug abuse professionals in the Central Coast area and it is a shame no one was able to help him. What a tragedy and so young with his life in front of him. No one should have to endure this. That is why there is a word when you lose a spouse (a widow/widower) a parent (orphan) but no word for someone who loses a child…it is that devastating. My prayers and thoughts are with the family.

It pains me to see of anyone so young die by any means, much less a drug overdose.

Only Kelly knows if and how much his transgressions and failures figure in to it. Unfortunately there is no act of contrition that will bring his son back to life. That’s a life sentence right there.

Yet another blood sacrifice on the altar of Kelly Gearhart’s greed and selfishness. The man has no soul.

How awful those materialistic misdeeds that have so redefined our world in the last few years could manifest karma with such awful results. While we groan under the weight of the burden left from financial recklessness we must also weep for all the devastated innocents.

Membership in the DKP (dead kid’s parent) club demands lifelong dues of despair and hopelessness. This distinction could never be earned as experience has taught.

What a cautionary tale. It is so sad that he was so young, and that the a**holedness of his father had such a profound impact on him.

Wow. If ever this is a good reason to look in the mirror to see what your lifestyle can do to those around you, this is a prime example. Perhaps you are just “a little” unscrupulous in your business dealings, perhaps you have wronged a few people and screwed them over; it all can come back to bite you when you least expect it, and in a manner you don’t anticipate. “The sins of the father …. ” so on and so on; Mr. Gearhart, I’m sure you are hurting from this news, but seriously, did you expect to behave like it is alleged you have done and not have any “karmic” payback? It is very sad that your son died much too young, the question is, will you be able to attend his funeral, or will you be too afraid that you will be arrested if you set foot back in California? Hopefully Jake is at peace now.

A very sad story. My condolences to those who have lost their loved one.

I hope someone looks into the matter of a heroine overdose in a rehab center. Blessings.

agreed, the name of the rehab should be published so everyone can make sure not to send(refer) loved ones there. Just tragic for the Gearheart family, they have enough grief to bear…even if they brought it on themselves.

@danika, I’m so glad that you responded in a classy way. Like Pasoparent, we don’t always see eye to eye but I do believe you to be good respectable people.

My condolences go out to this young man’s family. I can’t imagine the pain they must be going through.

TQ, thank you for your post. I know how hard it is to lose a close loved one and feel a grieving family deserves respect and consideration.

Peace be to this young man. This is very sad! As a parent I would never want my children to suffer for my wrongdoing. My prayers and thoughts are with him.
