SLO resident robbed in Mission Plaza

January 23, 2013

carTwo suspects attacked and robbed a man Monday night in Mission Plaza.

San Luis Obispo resident Gareth Morgan, 26, was walking in Mission Plaza around 10 p.m. on Monday when two suspects, described by witnesses as “transient,” attacked him, San Luis Obispo police say. Bystanders yelled at the suspects, who then fled with Morgan’s backpack and wallet.

Morgan suffered cuts to his face and a possible concussion. He received treatment at Sierra Vista Hospital.

A female with a pit bull and a second “shaggy” dog also fled with the suspects.

Witnesses described the suspects as white males in their mid 20s. One was wearing a blue crew sweatshirt, and the other was wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt. Witnesses also described the female as “transient.”

Variety of crime naturally occurs due to circumstance or condition when new incoming homeless migrates into town.

AKA TRANSIENTS

MORE ANTICIPATED TO COME

Described them as “transient.” The T-word. How bigoted we’ve become when all we can see is what people look like.

Should use the “B” word. More fitting.

How funny some people make fun of the North County, build it SLO and they will come right down to the middle of town. North County gets the last laugh on this one.

A home for the homeless – http://calcoastnews.com/2012/03/a-home-for-the-homeless/

what ever happened to the word vagrant – political correctness!

Transients are a big problem to our county, and I am always amazed at how young they are. I was shopping down town when two young women sitting on a bench asked me if I had any change. I could not resist so walked up to them and said, yes I do have change. Well can you spare some change. I replied, would you like to know why i have change. They did not respond so i told them, i have change because i have had a job since i was twelve years old. If you two young ladies did the same you would have change…. They went on to tell me that they didn’t want to work, they liked their life. They got to hang out with their friends all day. They didn’t want the burden and responsibility of a job, or rent.

What do you do to help people with this kind of mentality – build a shelter.

Build it & they will come …in droves!

What ever happened to the word “vagrant”?

Or “BUM/DEADBEAT “

“Vagrant” and “bum/deadbeat” are the people we pine for in old SLO. The railroad bums – see the first line of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road”, “I awoke under the lights of the train station in San Luis Obispo” – would sleep in Mitchell Park. Typically on social security and staying for a day or two, they were no threat to the moms with strollers and would frequently dispense drunken wisdom to the older kids. The ones that were a problem would be picked up by the PD and given the choice between the northern or southern city limit with strict instructions not to return. This was before Santa Cruz was buying bus tickets to export problems to SLO (not a “rumor” as Congalton says) and Rizzo and Jenkins found that there was money to be made representing rights of the mentally ill turned out on the streets. It’s all over, downtown SLO will have to be protected as an economic asset to the city at the cost of millions in law enforcement, cops EVERYWHERE. Enjoy! Most of the “advocates” for the poor are now in the for for-profit poverty industry and have no interest in reducing their market share.

I enjoyed reading your post, Obispan, until it got to the part about “…representing the rights of the mentally ill.” I will agree with you that inviting or accepting the traveling poor to SLO to panhandle and/or rob it’s citizenry is a bad idea (thanks Santa Cruz). However, where we need to differentiate is between “transients” who could but won’t work and the mentally ill who often are so sick that they can’t even figure out how to get on disability or if they are on disability even have the coherence to be able to pick up a check. The mentally ill are most often only harmful to themselves. Those among us without medication you will see them digging through garbage cans looking for food while talking to themselves. These are different from the panhandlers that we see sitting around holding up signs asking for $$. Most mentally ill, without medication, would not be able to focus enough to even make a sign that could communicate with others their needs. Most mentally ill who are transient and on there own in SLO County are most likely without medication. These poor souls need all the help they can get. Please cut them some slack as you would anyone else with a chronic, debilitating physical illness.

A am aware of all your points, however, the solution to the mentally ill or criminal cannot fall on the homeless resort cities alone. If you need to be taken care of by the state, the state has the right to set the rules. If you refuse to be taken care of by the state you have no right to benefits on your own terms.

The HOMELESS PERP is going to run into the wrong person and we won,t have to worry about them anymore , there are CWP people out there

In California? I know there are a few, but pretty hard to find from what I’ve heard. We need to rent a one-way bus and send our “transients” to Texas. If they pull stuff like this down there it will be their last stunt. I’m sure you all know that it’s extremely easy to get a Concealed Weapons Permit in Texas and a lot of good citizens “carry” all of the time. But in CA we build them a shelter. No wonder they love us and want to stay:))

I see the city is about to spend big bucks on a new transient shelter (Marsh Street Bridge,) Why not take some of that money and add a police foot patrol around downtown. If New York can do it, why can’t San Luis Obispo? The city really needs to do something before someone gets killed.

A foot patrol is a great idea. It could be paid for by ticketing all the illegal smoking that goes on unabated and apparently unenforced as well. And they could also catch lots of cell phone abuse in cars.

Forget the police state tactics! Don’t look to the governmemt to solve your problems! May every citizen be armed and defend himself!

The homeless will watch, and laugh at, any increased police presence. It is financially unsustainable and they’ll just wait until the police are gone. Rizzo, Jenkins, and the homeless industry have set up shop, as have their clients, in our homeless resort city. The next lawsuit is going to be to require the city to provide sanitation and trash collection services to those who now have the right live in vehicles on the street, the city’s common-to-all-cities ordinance against that having been thrown out. I used to support liberals preventing money-grubbing conservatives from selling out MY quality of life for their financial gain. When will we hold the homeless industry to that standard?

I read in the local paper rag this morning that an official commented they don’t think they have a problem down at the Mission Plaza. REALLY??? I have read numerous cases in the last year. How about the young guys and the stabbing? SLO is having a SERIOUS problem with transients in the area and they better get a plan together before someone gets hurt.

BTDT,

Someone did get hurt, which is the crux of the story. A plan should be put together before someone gets KILLED!

Hey, why not build the 200 bed homeless shelter within the Catholic Church on the Mission Plaza with all that extra building space? What would be the reasoning not too?

The local rag operates under strict rules and always has. All stories must be cleared by the advertising and editorial departments. Nothing bad for business or personal relationships unless it’s just too obvious and a cost-benefit analysis has been done. Downtown SLO is Disneyland and you are to spend money accordingly. NO BAD PRESS. CCN has kinda f’d up that paradigm.
