Motorcyclist killed, passenger seriously injured in Nipomo crash

November 11, 2018

For the fourth time in a span of 36 days, a motorcyclist died in a South County crash. [Cal Coast Times]

At about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, John Ricker, 62, of Arroyo Grande was stopped at the intersection of Wineman Road and Thompson Avenue before he pulled in front of a motorcycle headed north on Thompson Avenue. Ricker did not see the motorcycle before pulling his Chevrolet Silverado directly in its path.

The 42-year-old motorcyclist from Santa Maria crashed into the side of Ricker’s truck ejecting him and his female passenger, a 41-year-old woman from Santa Maria, from the motorcycle. The male was pronounced dead at the scene. His female passenger suffered major injuries and was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria.

Late last month, a motorcyclist died in a solo vehicle crash at the intersection of Osage Street and Camino Caballo in Nipomo.

Earlier in October, an 18-year-old Cal Poly student and a 49-year-old Los Osos man both died in motorcycle crashes on Highway 101 near El Campo Road in Arroyo Grande. The fatal crashes on Highway 101 occurred within two days of each other.

I used to ride motorcycles a lot, and I can’t tell you how many times I had people in cars look right at me, and pull in front of me or cut me off as if I wasn’t there! If you are riding your bike in a sane and safe manner, and some knucklehead pulls in front of you like this, it’s their fault hands down. They should be tried for manslaughter if they kill a rider this way. Granted, there are some riders that are stupid and ride very unsafe, I have seen them and they are just asking for trouble.

I’m betting that handing out hefty jail sentences to drivers who kill people would improve the vision of all bad drivers. The primary reason motorcycles are “dangerous” is because the average car driver is stupid.

And how many of us have almost hit a motorcyclist because the cyclist has decided to ride in an unsafe and dangerous manner, lane splitting unsafely. I even seen many cyclists ride on the shoulder and cross a double yellow line to pass. Many cyclists have no problem riding this way.

I ride Motorcycles

I plan on calling The SLO county DAs office in the morning and asking why manslaughter charges have not been brought against both of the driver’s who have pulled out and killed two men and maybe a woman.

No excuses for a driver to say that I didn’t see a biker after the sun goes down.

To the rest of you,

Get off your phone and look for the Bikes.

It was just an accident and because they were only motorcyclist, you know, those risk takers, everyone knows that they are dangerous and not to mention a time when they were all hoodlums anyway. Now that we have finally smartened up to have gender, racial, and religion equality, maybe it’s time to recognize that motorcyclist are consequential too. I can’t count the times, where I’ve wondered if the car driver was unaware or just didn’t care?
