A California Highway Patrol helicopter airlifted an injured man off Bishop Peak Sunday morning. [Cal Coast Times]

The 30-year-old San Jose man suffered undisclosed injuries after falling from a rock just off the Bishop Peak trail near the top of the mountain. The man tried to hike out on his own but could not manage because of the thick brush and extreme pain, according to the CHP.

The man was a bicyclist, but it is unclear if the man was riding a bicycle at the time of his fall.

San Luis Obispo fire personnel requested assistance from the CHP helicopter crew. The crew located the injured man and rescuers in heavy brush and lifted the San Jose resident up to the helicopter.

The helicopter flew the man to the base of the mountain, where a San Luis Ambulance crew and fire personnel were waiting. After receiving care at the base of the mountain, the man was flown in the helicopter to the hospital.

His current condition has not been disclosed.

No, he was not riding a bicycle in the impossible rocky terrain, and YES it’s easy to twist an ankle, especially when going off trail. I would be in favor of having the “rescued” share in the cost of this if they were found to be engaged in reckless behaviors ( going off trial, being under the influence, using trails after dark without appropriate lighting, etc.). Seems like this is becoming more common. It’s a beautiful urban hike and hate to see the City Council consider banning it’s use.
