A shark attacked and killed a male surfing in the waters off Morro Bay on Friday morning, according to the Morro Bay Harbor Department.

At 10:39 a.m., a caller reported a surfer had been attacked in an area know as the Pit, which is north of Morro Rock. First responders arrived to find the male face down in the surf, the victim of an “apparent” shark attack.

The victim’s name is not being release pending notification of his next of kin.

While the public is permitted on Morro Bay’s beaches, city officials are not permitting anyone in the ocean for 24 hours.

Early 1979, ditched school to go surfing off the Rock. Sitting in the line-up, around 2 hours later, I observed a large grey bit of fleshy sea creature rise above the water, less than 15ft from me.

I spun the board, and bellied in the next wave. Two weeks later, they killed that 15ft Great White, about a mile off the Rock. That was the last time I ever surfed…and cut school.

“Cage goes in the water, you go in the water. Shark’s in the water. Our shark.” (sings) “Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies…”.

Sharks have always been off these beaches and, hopefully, they always will be. The surfer undoubtedly knew this and yet he braved it. Unfortunate, but not surprising.

And, Karen, a simple proof reading would have pointed out that you needed a “d” at the end of know and release. Two errors in 100 words is pretty typical for CCN. Too bad you can’t afford someone to proof read.

Merry Christmas to you too dude!!! Nice heart. Wow! The “Tin Man” in need of….

This is horrific news. So very sad. I pray for his family.
