Newsom extends health benefits to undocumented immigrants

Amid a huge budget shortfall, on Monday Governor Gavin Newsom offered comprehensive healthcare insurance to California’s approximately 700,000 undocumented immigrants.

“In California, we believe everyone deserves access to quality, affordable healthcare coverage — regardless of income or immigration status,” Newsom said in a statement to ABC News. “Through this expansion, we’re making sure families and communities across California are healthier, stronger, and able to get the care they need when they need it.”

In 2022, Newsom and state lawmakers agreed to extend Medi-Cal benefits to immigrants. Since then, California’s budget deficit has grown to $68 billion.

The plan to provide medical insurance for immigrants is slated to cost the state about $3.1 billion per year.

The California Senate Republican Caucus argues that adding 700,000 illegal immigrants to Medi-Cal will exacerbate issues with provider access.

It’s horrifying to realize there are so many people who would deny sick people basic healthcare, leaving men, women, and children to die in the streets. God forgive them for they know not what they do.

Secret of joy and peace and prosperity in our community is to provide free healthcare and free education. Anything less is inhumane and sacrilegious.

A good step toward universal coverage. If an American goes to most foreign nations to work their health care is free. Why should we be different?

“…goes to most foreign nations to work…” being the operative sentence. When they work, they pay taxes for the universal medical coverage.

Also the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is issued together with the national health card and you need to prove you are eligible for the EHIC.

We have to remember that US have substantially more undocumented migrants than the EU; and some EU countries charges up to 79.5% of taxes to help defray medical care, among other things.

Why don’t you donate 50-75% of your pay to help Newsom pay for Medi-Cal?

Maybe Gov Newsom and all politicians should be required to use the Medi-Cal health care system. It might give them some insight into how it is now and how their actions are going to impact it.

Prop 15 would affect commercial and industrial properties, not residential property. It would also make it possible for you to take the tax break with you when selling your home and apply it to the new property up to the sales price of the prop 13 home, you could do this even if you moved to a different county giving homeowners the opportunity to move out of disaster-prone zones.
