County unemployment rate at record high

San Luis Obispo County’s jobless rate hit a record 10.6 percent in January, up from December’s revised rate of 9.8 percent, the state’s Employment Development Department reported Wednesday.
The number of unemployed county residents rose by 1,900 people during the month, bringing the 12 month total of non-farm jobs lost to 5,200.
Statewide, the unemployment rate increased to 12.5 percent in January, compared with a national 10.6 percent rate.
California had the fifth-highest rate in the country behind Michigan at 14.3 percent, Nevada at 13 percent, Rhode Island at 12.7 percent followed by South Carolina at 12.6 percent.
