Firestone Brewery wins six gold medals

April 13, 2010

Firestone Brewery in Paso Robles was the big winner in the Craft Brewers Conference in Chicago last weekend, bringing home six gold medals. [ChicagoTribune]

Enjoying what what was touted as the largest beer pairing dinner ever, industry insiders sampled delicacies such as escarole and arugula salad with Firestone Walker’s India pale ale; pork belly with an Allagash Bourbon barrel-aged tripel; chocolate bread paired with Goose Island’s Bourbon County Stout and cream of pearl barley soup with Bell’s porter.

Then came the awards. More than 640 breweries from 33 countries submitted 3,330 beers which battled for gold, silver and bronze medals.

Firestone was named champion mid-sized brewery for the third time.

Congrats to Firestone and all their hard-working and talented employees. These kudos are well deserved, and the north county is fortunate to have you here.

BTW, after reading about this I sped down to Spencers and picked up a 12er of world-class, gold-medal-winning Firestone Pale 31 “American style pale ale” for the bargain price of about a buck a bottle. It’s outstanding. Sometimes the planets do line up.

Congrats to Firestone.

It would be helpful to know, in general terms, how many different awards were given at the event, If they awarded “best India pale ale served with escarole and arugula,” among 639 other categories, then the showing isn’t quite as strong as say, 20 different categories.

Here’s a link to the fact sheet from the event, in pdf format. It should answer your questions. The field was large, as was the judge pool. Firestone earned this one.

Way to go Firestone. We are all proud of you. I saw another famous Paso Robles entrepreneur on Martha Stewart the other day. Apparently he has a claim to fame as one of the Country’s top rose growers. I’ll have to look up his nursery after I stop by for a salad and sip of pale ale.
