Memorial Day events around the county

Enjoy your day off on Monday, but also try to take some time to remember why we celebrate Memorial Day. Spend part of the time honoring the men and women who sacrificed in order to preserve our freedom.

There are a number of events scheduled throughout the county on Monday:

Atascadero: 11 a.m. Program at Atascadero Cemetery includes service, speaker, flyover and laying of wreaths. A potluck luncheon follows at the VFW Post 2814 in Atascadero.

Cambria: 11 a.m.  Dedication of a monument to members of the Merchant Marine who served during World War II. Hosted by Cambria’s American Legion Post 432. Followed by a Sons of the American Legion and Legion Auxiliary barbecue for $5. Veterans Memorial Building flag stand, 1000 Main St., Cambria.

Cayucos: 3 p.m. 8th Annual “Lost at Sea” Memorial Service dedicated to all those lost at sea, military, commercially and recreationally. Hosted by Tom Madsen and chaplain Bill Huston. Gather at the base of the pier and walk together to the sea and remember those who never returned.

Los Osos: 11 a.m.  Ceremony, entertainment and wreath laying, followed by  a barbecue lunch benefiting local youth charities. Los Osos Valley Memorial Park, 2260 Los Osos Valley Road.

Paso Robles:  11 a.m. Features flyover by the Estrella War Birds, presentation, and wreath laying. Organized by the Paso Robles District Cemetery, American Legion Post 50 and VFW Post 10965. Paso Robles District Cemetery, 45 Nacimiento Lake Drive, Paso Robles.

Templeton: 11 a.m.  Service and flyover by Estrella War Birds, followed by barbecue  to benefit the California Boys and Girls State Program. Presented by Templeton American Legion Post 220. Templeton Cemetery, 100 Templeton Cemetery Road, Templeton. $6 to $10 for barbecue.
