Law targets adults who give alcohol to minors
August 19, 2010
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill that adds California to the list of states in which adults can be held legally responsible for knowing allowing minors to drink in their homes. If an alcohol related accident is found to be the primary cause of an injury or a death, the adult who condoned the drinking faces both legal and monetary repercussions. [MercuryNews]
While it was already illegal to give alcohol to minors, California had been one of just three states that prohibited civil lawsuits against adults following an injury or a death related to a minor drinking.
The bill will not apply to licensed alcohol vendors.
