Spotlight: What’s happening this weekend
September 3, 2010
The first week in September is looking to be a little slower than August, but as the summer winds down, other events are stepping up to the plate.
Help the kids celebrate National Literacy Month by taking them to the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum to read a story or enjoy story time. The museum will feature story time from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Sep. 3.
The next day, make your way back downtown to the Mission Plaza for Brews and Bites. The San Luis Brewers Guild will host its second annual beerfest from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature local musicians and offer beer connoisseurs the chance to taste different kinds of beers by choosing one of three tasting packages. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Woods Humane Society and Earth Day Alliance.
Let the beer settle for a few days before heading over to the Ludwick Community Center on Tuesday to partake in some cooking classes. Global Gourmet will host the event that allows participants to earn different cooking techniques from local chefs. But be sure to come hungry because after learning how to make julienne carrots or to carmelize an onion just right, participants will have the chance to sample the dish they make. The class is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will cost $15. For more information contact San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation at 805-781-7300.
Make sure to get plenty of rest on Wednesday night because Thursday will be the biggest day of your week. Start off by taking the kids to the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum for its Lil’ Art Explorers event. The 30-minute art class is for children 18 months to 3 and a half years old and is free with paid admission into the museum. However, there are only 10 spots available for the class so be sure to reserve your child’s spot early by calling 805-544-5437. The art class begins at 11 a.m.
After you put the kids to bed following their art-filled day, head on over to the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez to see Engelbert Humperdink. The romantic crooner will be performing such hits as “Release Me” and “This Moment in Time.” Ticket prices range from $35 to $55. The show starts at 8 p.m.
