Local residents signed petitions opposing the discount grocery store and voiced their opposition to the store at city council and planning commission meetings over the past several months because of the store’s size and potential traffic problems. In addition, residents worried about how a fourth grocery store in a small demographic could harm competitors.
On Tuesday, the Arroyo Grande Planning Commission voted to scale down the projects size from 51,000 square foot to 36,100 square feet. As a result, the developer, Nick Tompkins, said Food 4 Less is no longer a proposed tenant.
