San Luis Obispo burglar detained by victim

April 22, 2011

Matthew Wykoff

A San Luis Obispo man and his friend stopped a burglar near the corner of Kentucky and Stafford streets shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Friday.

Andrew Chisamore, 20, and a friend were walking home when they saw Matthew Wykoff, 19, attempting to break the driver’s side window of Chisamore’s car with his fist.

Chisamore and his friend confronted Wykoff, wrestled him to the ground and worked to detain him. Wykoff punched Chisamore several times who punched back.

Both men sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

A vehicle waiting for Wykoff was seen leaving the area before San Luis Obispo Police arrived.

Police arrested Wykoff on suspicion of attempted vehicle burglary and assault. He was booked into County Jail with bail set at $50,000.

I love folks who say you can still be a ‘good person even after doing something evil’… You are what you do… and think.

Dads, is this the typical ‘hunk magnet’ you want your daughter to date?

Matthew is my brother and I love him with all my heart. He is human and make mistakes. Move on with your life and stop saying hateful comments to try to make yourselfs feel better, your just looking like a fool. I guarantee he has accomplished more than your son or daughter could ever. He hung out with the wrong crowd when he started college. There is more to this story than what you know.

This is exactly what everyone needs to start doing….take back our neighborhoods. Law enforcement agencies are so busy and short-handed, we need to start taking the initiative in our own neighborhoods and look out for one another.

one two many VBR

“one two many VBR”

Good point, very common at about that age.

I sure was no saint at that age.

He certainly does deserve public scorn. It could have been my car or anyone else’s. Don’t even try the old “judgmental” rebuke. He is deserving of judgment and we so judge his actions as dilatory and shameful. He is costing thousands of dollars of public money. Now, we certainly hope for his long term success, but I still hope that his face hurts long enough to learn a lesson and I hope his morals will improve.

Being “out of character” does not release that it was his own action. Judgment typically persists until redemption is obtained–in the U.S. that usually comes in the form of a fine, restitution, incarceration, probation, etc. Additionally, redemption is generally established by remorse and a demonstrable pattern of unbroken moral behavior AFTER the transgression.

Good behavior prior to a transgression might be used to reduce the effect of judgment, but does not relieve a transgressing act.

Mr. Wykoff needs to show remorse and rebuild a pattern of unbroken ethical behavior to regain his reputation. That will take time. Until then, judgments of his character will continue land in the range of untrusted to negative.

We wish him the best and hope that he offers his best in the future.

Appears a nice looking kid, well cared and feed, perhaps in this difficult time “make ends meet” leaving no family time to pass on moral/ ethic values.

This is a city PD holding tank mug photo, able to smile (naive).

I feel very sorry for him, likely a good kid under better conditions and association.

It is not under good conditions that morals and ethics are tested.

Vandalism and theft at 2:30 a.m.? No, I don’t feel sorry for him one bit. And I hope his bruises hurt for a while.

I don’t feel sorry for him either (I would have beat him to a pulp as well), he got what he deserved!

Now that the heat of the incident (where he got what he deserved) is over, a broader view point can be entertained to pity or even forgiveness.

Yeah, doesn’t he know one is not supposed to smirk for one’s mugshot? Then again, if he was smart, he would not have done this. Stupid criminal is definitely a redundant statement.

Wykoff may have trouble getting vehicle insurance now. He will have been rear ended too many times while in jail…;o)

This being the season of Repemption, my hope is that young Wykoff take a plea, serve a few months and go forward to lead a productive life.

Happy rotten trails, Mathew. Watch out for the rats and mildew in your jail cell.

Too bad Chisamore didn’t beat that cheesy smile off of Wykoff.
