Lois Capps running for reelection

July 29, 2011

Congresswoman Lois Capps announced on Friday, after the adoption of final congressional district lines by the California Redistricting Commission, that she plans to run for reelection.

“I am pleased to announce that I will be running for election to the 24th congressional district to represent the people of the Central Coast in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“The new 24th district is comprised of a wonderfully diverse array of communities, from coastal communities like Cambria, Santa Barbara and Carpinteria, to vital agricultural centers such as Paso Robles, Santa Maria and the Santa Ynez Valley, and important centers of education, military and high tech like San Luis Obispo, Vandenberg Air Force Base and Goleta. I am very excited to have the opportunity to once again represent the hardworking people of these wonderful communities.

“Our country faces many challenges today and the people of the Central Coast know that we all need to come together to meet them. I have a record of accomplishment that I believe reflects the common sense values of the Central Coast and I always work hard to put achieving solutions above partisan concerns.

“Right now, I am focused on the job my constituents have elected me to do – like getting our economy fully restarted and creating jobs, protecting Medicare and Social Security from those who want to want to privatize them, and improving our children’s education opportunities and moving our country to a clean energy future. But at the appropriate time I will once again run a strong, positive grassroots campaign that focuses on the issues.

“Finally, I appreciate the time and effort of the Commissioners to complete the laborious effort of drafting the new lines for Congressional districts. The people of California owe them a debt of gratitude for their perseverance in completing this difficult task.”

This is a sad day for the country – just as it is a sad day when any of the current members of Congress announce they will run for reelection. All of them, including this woman, need to go. We can no longer afford the “luxury” of being held hostage by our own representatives. If they really represented us, we wouldn’t be on the brink of default. The president promised to change the way Washington does business. Great job on that count, too.

We are fighting four wars with borrowed money and looking for a fifth, yet you feel that you are a victim of the government because you have to pay for it? cry us a river you poor poor thing. its late in the game to be complaining and asking for new blood.

we have sown the wind now we reap the whirlwind. Lois voted against a war if I recall correctly. Long live Lois Capps.

Right on zap, you are correct!.

If you weren’t so myopic, you would understand that the point was not about any policy of any administration. It is simply that every member of Congress has been avoiding compromise on the debt ceiling/budget cuts that we are on the verge of default. In other words, politics is king, representing the people and doing right by them takes a back seat to their own interests. Their job is singular – getting reelected. Lois is no different. She has provided no leadership in solving this crisis (maybe because she is in no position of leadership after all these years). She, and the rest, need to go.

It would be nice if our “representatives” just took a hands-off approach to “fixing” the economy by creating jobs. That hollow promise is getting real old. Any jobs that our government creates in the private sector is temporary. Perhaps new federal jobs are permanent, but we need more of them like a hole in the head. Look how many “permanent” jobs the stimulus package created. I would like to see congress take about 3 months off and do NOTHING. The majority of what they do is a waste of taxpayer’s money.

I won’t be voting for her. Is California in a better position with her representation. Not in my opinion.

She’s got my vote!!!! Thanks Lois, many of us appreciate your hard work and love of the central coast.

I am so glad she is representing us. What a relief to have her instead of some tea-bagger carrying water for the Koch brothers and their ilk..

or a weepy whiner orange guy.playing the victim holding everyone hostage. (derail why is Mr. Bonner orange?)

At least he didn’t cry.

If the GOP could put up a candidate that could win, let em! But what do they give you? Carpetbagger unholy rich folk. The worst CEO’s in history. Any body that can pay the toll. A party in California that is selling themselves to the highest bidder, and it isn’t even subtle. Hello! didn’t the GOP learn anything last election?

She promised to run only one term after taking over for her deceased husband. All the times she’s been on Congalton, I don’t think anyone has asked her why she didn’t keep that promise. Maybe I will next time she’s on KVEC. She’s a left-wing flake….a big disappintment as far as I’m concerned.

Question: Is it true that Congress, both Senate and House, only work Tuesday through Thursday?? I’ve heard that rumor on several fronts….maybe it’s true!!

Get over it “Scoopone”. Is that the best you can do in trying to attack Lois Capps?

Lois Capps ran for re-election because the MAJORITY of voters in her district WANTED HER TO. It’s called “Democracy”. And we can be glad she heeded the encouragement of local voters.

At the time Lois Capps said she would not run for re-election both she and her constituents didn’t know the extent that she would enjoy and be well-sutied for the job. It turns out she likes her job and does it well and voters seem to agree, as they continue to elect her.

It was also once thought that term-limits are of benefit, but fresher wisdom shows that having experienced politicians in office is most often the best for citizens, as it limits the influence of lobbyists.

Lois Capps Rocks!

Nothing like “consensus,” right, WiseGuy?

I didn’t know they worked at all. They are too busy licking stamps on junk mail telling their constituents what a great job they have done. Unfortunately our repreentatives are reelected much of the time based on what they have done for their district. And what they have done usually involves $$$ that the federal government creates on their printing presses. I would be more willing to vote for someone who did things that would benefit the COUNTRY as a whole, and many times that involves hard choices that most will not make. Honesty and integrity are too very important qualities in a representative, a trait that is lacking in much of our representatives starting with the president.

…and I’ll be doing my damnedest to see that she is defeated! It’s time!

Remind me . . . was it after two or three terms that Ms. Capps originally said she’d step down? Easy to forget details like that once one has breathed the heady aroma of the halls of Congress.

Slonative, are you nuts? Why in the world should Lois Capps “step down”? Why should she go against the will of the majority of voters in her district?

And really, how many people voted for Capps because they hoped she would step down?

Politicians have the right to change their minds and should be encouraged to do so when new information and experience suggests a fresh course of action will be of greater benefit to constituents. Voters can then decide at the ballot box whether the new course of action is wise or not. Obviously, judging by Capps re-election after re-election, the majority of voters are very pleased by Capps choice.

Good politicians returning to duty should be encouraged rather than criticized. We need MORE, not less, hard-working, honest, experienced politicians in office. And that’s why we can be grateful Lois Capps is once again running for re-election.

People also have a right to expect someone to keep their word. The fact she’s been reelected speaks against both Capps and the voters.

Lois Capps never promised YOU anything, SLONative. Get real. You didn’t vote for her then and it looks like you won’t in the future.

The fact that Lois Capps continues to be re-elected is democracy in action, something you, perhaps, don’t appreciate.

Lois Capps serves at the request of the majority of voters in her district and she has done so honorably. It doesn’t get any more legitimate than that in modern politics. Lois Capps is the real thing.

Lois Capps ROCKS!

The fact she’s been reelected speaks against both Capps and the voters.… just think about this statement for a second or two… uh . wow. what are they putting in those tea bags today? Can I haz been re-elected?

wise guy some times you make too much sense: Politicians have the right to change their minds and should be encouraged to do so when new information and experience suggests a fresh course of action will be of greater benefit to constituents. Voters can then decide at the ballot box whether the new course of action is wise or not. Obviously, judging by Capps re-election after re-election, the majority of voters are very pleased by Capps choice.

you really do; Good politicians returning to duty should be encouraged rather than criticized. We need MORE, not less, hard-working, honest, experienced politicians in office. And that’s why we can be grateful Lois Capps is once again running for re-election.

the best question ; Why in the world should Lois Capps “step down”? Why should she go against the will of the majority of voters in her district?!!!! needs to be said again.
