Chemical bomb exploded at Atascadero High School

December 15, 2011

The San Luis Obispo County Hazmat team was sent to investigate and clean up after someone detonated a device commonly called a chemical bomb shortly before 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Atascadero High School.

Atascadero police said the explosion of the small chemical bomb did not cause any permanent damage and no one was hurt. However, it is a felony to make and detonate one of these devices.

The bomb maker apparently combined household cleaning supplies in a plastic bottle and sealed it causing a chemical reaction that made the plastic bottle expand and eventually explode, a process frequently taught in high school science classes.

While gearhead and miller sip cocktails on us……. After stealing over $100 million, lying their way through bk hearings and fleeing the state (gearhead) they remain free and living large.

Couple kids fiddle with vinegar and the cops will hound them to the end of time.

who’s gearhead? and is bk Burger King? I’m having trouble understanding your post …are they involved with the chemical explosion

Jeeeze …………………….

They sent a hazmat team in to clean up BAKING SODAY and VINEGAR?! REALLY?! This is just getting stupid. This is all about public employees padding their pockets. No one in their right mind can justify this kind of overreaction, nor the felony charge associated with making a “chemical bomb.” This is just just getting stupid to the point of absurdity.

Huh? I used to mix baking soda and vinegar to release extra CO2 into my greenhouse. I can see how it would blow up a plastic bottle and I suppose it could be dangerous if someone was standing too close but a felony?

While I’m no fan of over-bloated public salaries; it *could* possibly be because they did not know it was vinegar and baking soda at the time they were sent in?

Just playing devil’s advocate here.

What? We teach our kids how to make this so-called bomb in school and then charge them with a felony when the build it? We might as well start teaching our kids how to make meth, rob a bank, lift a wallet……..

REALLY?! Is blowing up a 2 liter with CO2 anything like teaching them to rob a bank? Maybe we should just not make this a felony.

What happens when someone gets killed??? No, I totally agree that the whole deal is overkill. I just found it kind of funny that the kidees were taught to build it in their chem class.
