Cuesta College's Superintendent-President Gil Stork cuts a ribbon leading into the Student Success Center. Flanking him are, left, Mary Hastings, who supervises the facility, and Marcia Munson, who was the center's overseer for the first 20 years of its existence.

Cuesta College’s tutoring services were recognized for 40 years of service with a certificate from Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian at a celebration on Wednesday.

Several dozen students, faculty members and local dignitaries were on hand for a re-dedication of the San Luis Obispo campus facility that over the past four decades has employed “hundreds of students” to help “tens of thousands of students” achieve higher grades with the free service, said Mary Hastings, supervisor of the student success center.

After speeches and a ribbon cutting, birthday cake was served.

Also on hand was Marcia Munson, founding center supervisor, who recalled the early days when “cows used to stick their heads through the windows to moo at us” while tutors and students worked.

“It’s thriving and a beautiful facility,” Munson. “Cuesta students are very lucky to have it.”

Over the past four decades, the center has served thousands of Cuesta College students, who have witnessed their grades improve in some cases from Ds to As.
