Salinas boy kills dog by hanging

October 29, 2012

A 12-year-old Salinas boy allegedly hung and killed his terrier-mix dog on Friday. [TheCalifornian]

Police said he told them he was angry at the 12-pound dog and wanted to see it die.

Shortly after 4 p.m., a 911 caller hung up before explaining the emergency, but not before a dispatcher heard the caller say “he is hurting the dog.”

When police arrived, the occupants of the apartment refused to allow them entry. Police obtained a pass-key, entered the apartment and found the dead dog hanging from its collar on the boy’s bedroom door handle.

Police booked the suspect into Monterey County Juvenile Hall for felony cruelty to an animal. Officers say he showed no remorse for his actions.

That punk needs the crap kicked out of him.

I hate to admit it but that is exactly how I felt when I read this story. It’s the wrong thing to do but I can’t help how I felt.

The article reports the boy “was angry at the dog and wanted to see it die.”

That is pretty much the attitude to those who support the death penalty.

The boy, whether conscious of it or not, was simply mirroring the attitude and vengeful actions sanctioned by our community and government that teaches our children that it is OK to kill as a method of punishment or disposing of a problem.

Oh brother…..seriously, dude?

Yes, very seriously.

What’s YOUR theory?

this kid should not be in society near other animals (and perhaps not near other kids) if he has such issues. He should get immediate mental health evaluation and assistance. Kid needs to be seeing a therapist or on medications or both.

RIP dog, and may your soul be in heaven with other animals finally enjoying life.

No doubt this kid and family have major problems, but I fail to make the connection that this is what the death penalty encourages and inspires (from Wiseguy). Really – the fact that this state has a death penalty (which is almost never enforced) caused this kid to kill his dog. Someone else has a major problem if they can equate these two. It is my belief that a state, or society, that quickly and swiftly carries out the enforcement of its laws, in no uncertain terms, will be a better state, or society.

Quite frankly, if that kid was mine, he would be unable to sit down for at least a week, maybe longer.

Unfortunately, if I was the parent, I would be in jail for child abuse. Crazy, crazy world we live in now.

And lastly, someone else commented that they wouldn’t allow this family to adopt another dog from the animal shelther. What, may I ask, would prevent this? Is this part of the same unenforced law that prevents criminals of obtaining guns? Is there a ‘can not adopt’ list that dog shelters must look at to see if one is allowed to adopt. Get real, stop trying to pass all sorts of laws or rules and expect

that to be the solution. Bring back swift and exact punishment.

Paso-citizen. Wiseguy isn’t too far off in my opinion, where he mentions that the family shouldn’t be allowed to adopt another pet from a shelter. I say “not too far off” because while there is no state wide list of people who shouldn’t be allowed to adopt animals, there are many reasons a persons application to adopt can be denied. There are also plenty of animal lovers who volunteer at shelters and you can be certain that this current story has gone through every shelter and animal organization. They will remember the name of this family and they will keep up with the progress of these criminal charges while keeping each other informed when anyone hears something new about the case. Not because it’s part of the job but because it’s part of their nature (at least it is with the volunteers). I would bet $$ to donuts that at least here locally, this family will not be able to adopt another dog from a shelter as someone there will know who they are and see to it that they are denied.

There really should be a list that the USHS distributes to shelters that identifies anyone charged with animal cruelty. Perhaps one day, there will be one.

Thanks Cindy for being a rational voice in a sea of knee jerk emotional bufoonerey. Your opening

comment: “The entire family needs help and an evaluation. His kid has severe anger issues and a professional needs to get to the bottom of it.” is precisely what needs to happen through the courts. This

would be an appropriate referral to a forensic psychologist or psychiatrist experienced in using the state of the art assessment instrument known as the PCL (Pschopathy Checklist) developed by the acknowledged world expert on psychopathy; Robert Hare. Please refer to his landmark book “Without Conscience.”

Only a thorough assessment by a forensic specialist will avail. I am not labeling/diagnosing , but this is not a good symptom, and my guess is that there are other indicators that we are not privy to.

This is exactly the type of violent behavior that the death penalty encourages and inspires. Sad.

Unfortunately a lot of future murderers begin by harming and killing helpless animals. This kid needs a complete psychiatric evaluation; and his family deserves some help, too, to deal with this kid. Did anyone even try to stop him? And I sure wouldn’t let them adopt a dog from any public animal shelter.

Sounds equally like the profile of a successful corporate executive or political candidate. This fellow has a bright future at Wall Street.

Or a low paid, bitter cartoonist.

I agree. The entire family needs help and an evaluation. His kid has severe anger issues and a professional needs to get to the bottom of it.

“When police arrived, the occupants of the apartment refused to allow them entry.” I have to wonder if the occupants were other kids or if any family members were there? I doubt that this was the first time that he abused an animal or the family pet, so either way, what were the parents doing about his behavior and why did he even have a little defenseless 12lb dog?

“The righteous care for the needs of their animals, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.” (Proverbs 12:10)

This little minion of Satan will be judged one day before our Jesus. When he does, I am sure that the hottest place in Hell will be reserved for him. Praise!

Another one we can throw the key away one. Thank good is was a dog and not a family member although that may be up for discussion as more details are released. I don’t know about anyone else but I am getting tired of wasting our money and resources on these bat bashing, rock throwing, drug gangers, random shooters, car thefts, home intruders, rapes and all the other corruption happenings. We need stronger penalties not less. Bring back the firing squads and clean up this. Mexico did, they sent there rift raft over here after Obama and Holder gave them 5,000 guns to do the job with. What ever happened to the central coast in the past 5 to 10 years.

So SLObird, your solution is to kill, kill and kill again, until there is no one to cause you any problems. Sad.

No, my real solution would be to get some judges, prosecutors, etc. (not take the lead from Holder) and apply the laws on the books (we don’t need more) and enforce the laws to the full extent of the law and stop pandering to criminals. I would vote for LIFE IN PRISON if it meant life, but that is only good for 20 years or so, depending on how much money you have available, who you know, how good you are at faking out the system. Ask the family in Downey how they feel today after advertising a car on Craigslist to have another low life parolee come and kill three family members. Our society has lost it’s morale compass and a lot of this comes from our leadership, their decisions, or lack thereof. None thing seems to be true to the core anymore.
