The California Highway Patrol has identified the couple killed in a fatal hit-and-run Saturday in Shandon as Charles Massara, 69, and Irene Massara, 68, of Bakersfield. [KSBY]
The Massaras died Saturday after a Shandon man driving a Jeep under the influence of alcohol made a turn directly into their Nissan Versa on Highway 46.
Vicente Muniz Montes, the driver of the Jeep, then fled the scene with one passenger.
A CHP helicopter spotted Montes, 38, and his passenger, Florencio Ochoa Rojas, 27. K9 units chased down the fleeing suspects, and officers arrested both Montes and Rojas.
Montes is charged with vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence, felony driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, hit and run resulting in injury or death and failure to appear on a warrant for a previous DUI.
Rojas is charged with accessory to a felony.
