Former lieutenant governor Abel Maldonado finished the first half of the year in debt in his bid to become the next governor of California. [Tribune]

The Santa Maria native spent $3,348 more than he raised in the first six months of 2013, according to his filing statement. Maldonado raised $314,222 and spent $317,570. He spent $185,000 on campaign consultants and $48,000 on office expenses over a two-month span.

Governor Jerry Brown is yet to declare his bid for reelection, but he still raised $2.8 million over the same period. Brown only spent $31,526 and ended the filing period with a cash balance of more than $10 million.

Republican Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, who is challenging Maldonado for the party’s nomination, raised $83,148 in the first half of 2013.

Major contributors to Maldonado include Stephen Bechtel Jr., co-owner of the Bechtel Corporation, vice-chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Charles Munger Jr. and former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan.

Large donors to Brown’s reelection campaign include labor unions, oil companies, Indian gambling interests and the film industry. Brown raised more than $100,000 in one day from a group of four Hollywood personalities that included Steven Spielberg.

I’m putting my money on Donnelly. I’ve met him and in our conversation I found him to be a very good candidate. He isn’t a polished politician, so don’t expect every answer to dodge the question by being so PC you could vomit. But, that’s refreshing since most current politicians (including AWOL) are just polished tdurs anyway!

$185,000 for ‘campaign consultants’ ?

Hell…i’ll charge old Moldy less than half that for some real sage advice:

“YOU’RE A LOSER ! GO AWAY !”

That should save him alot of money.

Just when one thinks the DCC are scum of the Earth, here comes the Republicans’ answer… “see, we can do it, too!”

Go away, moldy.

I would vote for Karl Marx before ever considering a vote for this bleeding heart liberal. Mr. tax and spender – cheater dude. Go hire some more Mexican nationals and work your fields Mr. Maldonado. STAY OUT OF MY POCKET.

I hear one of his distant relatives, Jan, is for hire… (technically, she’s been bought and paid for, but don’t let that stop you).

Can this guy just please go away…

Apparently not. He will remain a commodity as a poster boy messican for the Republican party tho so we have not seen the last of un-Able.

My main question is how could unAbel spend $317,570 in the first half of 2013 for an election that won’t take place until November 4, 2014.

Did he use campaign funds pay some of his delinquent taxes? Or to cater a party? Or???

“Large donors to Brown’s reelection campaign include labor unions, oil companies, Indian gambling interests and the film industry. Brown raised more than $100,000 in one day from a group of four Hollywood personalities that included Steven Spielberg.”

And in here lies our problem…

How is that a “problem,” except to Maldonado?

“Hollywood Personalities” ? Most of those folks are about as shallow as a pie tin full of water at 12:00 noon in Death Valley…lol

Where is the problem with shallow people donating to campaigns?

No problem Mary you just keep on donating…lol

just kidding Mary…

That post makes absolutely no sense other in the recesses of the posters fingers.

Abel, are you REALLY able to manage the worlds 9th largest economy?

He couldn’t even manage to show up at some of his LAST’s campain events.

Or, more appropriately, manage the world’s fastest crashing economy?

PLEASE, can we get someone (from both parties) that can bring new ideas and solutions for a state that is in severe trouble. Right now their new solution is to tax all employees another 3% for retirement funds. So, employees will be paying 6% for social security and 3% for retirement in the future with no guarantee of your money’s investment – another union solution for all taxpayers. Anyone read the articles about Detroit’s failure due to a one party state. They deserve what they got, nothing, and so will we. Only in California can have healthcare with no increase in Dr’s and facilities and staff, a train to nowhere and a retirement fund with no guaranteed investment returns. They found a fountain of spending money!

Sure we can. The day we stop watching Soap Operas & American Idol, reading Tabloids & printed news, and ignoring the over abundance of thought control is the day we’ll probably consider someone who actually can do the job.
