Second California county votes to pursue secession

californiaCalifornia’s northeastern most county Modoc County joined neighboring Sikiyou County Tuesday in its pursuit of secession from the state of California and creation of the sate of Jefferson. [LA Times]

The Modoc County Board of Supervisors voted 4-0, with one member absent, in favor of a declaration to the California Legislature supporting secession. Siskiyou County declared its support for secession earlier this month.

“The Modoc County Board of Supervisors recognizes the lack of representation for rural and frontier counties in the California Legislature,” the declaration stated. “The board is aware of an increasing tendency by the state of California to exercise legislative and fiscal malfeasance in the form of illegal fire tax, property rights violations and assaults upon Second Amendment rights, as well as disregard for other inalienable rights of the citizens of Modoc County.”

Advocates of the state of Jefferson, named after Thomas Jefferson, hope other Northern California and Southern Oregon counties will also secede from their respective states and join the movement to create a new one.

Spokesman for the Jefferson Declaration Committee Mark Baird told the Redding Record-Searchlight that the group is seeking commitments from a dozen counties prior to asking California legislators to approve the secession plan. The seceding counties must then gain approval from Congress.

“This is going to have to be something the people bring forward,” said Modoc board chairman Geri Byre. “It’s gong to have to be from the bottom up, not from the top down.”

It matters not what those northern county mountain shiners and sister shaggers want, they’re not getting any part of this beautiful state to turn into an old, white, pink faced, fat fingered, fatass, restrictive rightwing nuthouse. If that’s what they want they are perfectly free to move to Texas, North Carolina, Virginia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, etc.


Not gonna happen here. It’s time they woke up and smelled their cousin and realized that the rest of the state voted out of office virtually every single Republican, and then adjust their sleep apnea masks and go back to sleep. The debate about your guns in pre-schools, your Jesus in science books, and your hatred of everybody non-white and non-hetero has been completed and you lost. You persuaded nobody. Even your beloved lunatic Mitt Romney who had nothing but bad things to say about this great state now lives here, in Fagtopia. Freakin hypocrite.


The fact is California is the epitome of states rights, individual freedom, and free markets, and conservatives choke on it. What right wing mouth breathers hate most about this state is exactly what makes us great – Immigration reform, gay marriage, higher taxes on the rich, universal healthcare, gun control, medical marijuana, abortion rights, minimum wage, consumer and environmental protections, f*ck the NRA, innovation, tolerance, acceptance, science, logic and democracy.


The dying breed of fat, white, ignorant butt chuggers whose lives revolve around guns, religion and hate will not be given one square inch of this great state to f*ck up, and very soon they will be dead and gone and nobody will even remember their names.

The coastal communities and the interior communities are in serious disagreement over substantive issues of public policy. Maybe the folks inland have a right to express their misgivings over the way things are going. Your reference to Jefferson being the author of the Declaration of Independence and using his name as an insult. May I offer words from that document:


“That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”


Seems to me that ‘Jefferson’ is a perfect name after all.

I doubt they will miss anything to do with California. For the most part, these folks just want to be left alone and not bothered with assaults on their rights and the constant barrage of garbage coming out of Sacramento. They don’t need Sacramento telling them what kind of gun they can and can’t hunt with and what they can and can’t do inside their home, etc. I hope they succeed, but that means California will just turn a darker shade of blue.

Most of the people I’ve met (friends or otherwise) feel that way, though. I have yet to meet anyone that thinks Sacramento is in touch, well-run, and has anyone but their own best interest at heart.


I mean, I’m sure there are some rabid, blind ideologues who live and breath politics; but for the actually useful and normal people, Sacto is generally frowned upon.

While I support the State of Jefferson effort, my follow-the-money mentality wonders whether they’ll miss any of the state programs underwritten by the wealthy urban counties they are eschewing.
