Morro Bay Mayor Jamie Irons announced Thursday that he is running for reelection.

Irons became mayor in late 2012 after securing a majority of the vote in the June primary. Less than one year into his term, though, Irons faced a recall effort.

In September 2013, Irons called for the firing of then city attorney Rob Schultz and then city manager Andrea Lueker. Irons eventually obtained a majority vote from the council, which reached separation agreements with Schultz and Lueker. However, the attempted termination of the city’s two top executives prompted the recall campaign, which fell slightly short of achieving the amount of signatures needed to create a recall election.

Irons’critics have accused him of lacking transparency, as he never sated publicly why he called for the termination of Schultz and Lueker. Opponents have also criticized him for agreeing with the California Coastal Commission order to move the city’s sewage treatment plant.

But, Irons states that he has displayed transparency in his first term and lists several accomplishments.

“I’ve follow through with my campaign promise of vision, transparency and leadership,” Irons said in a news release. “I’m proud to report the city received a grant to begin the process of updating our 26-year-old general plan, I’ve opened up Embarcadero lease negotiations for public input and I have allocated pavement funds in response to the needs of the community to not only resurfacing streets but also include repair.”

Morro Bay will hold a primary election in June. If no candidate receives a majority of the vote, a runoff will occur in November.

Irons should run….but in the opposite direction.

To run as an Independent, I nominate the guy that stole the chocolate cake from the Madonna Inn.

Be careful what you wish for, he’d probably win. At least you know where he’s coning from, THERE’S your “transparency”.

I don’t think that guy was going for transparency.

Same ideology, he wants his cake AND eat it too.

The City will be better off with changes that the current Council are not afraid to make. No matter the just awful attacks by those opposed to the new way. It would be terrific if in the next 4 months people could be civil. So, far the opposition has been brutish. We shall see.

Forgot the Wicca gal. (I think Majority Fan means “Wixom”)

YEAH!!!!!! Love the Wixoms!!!! Dr. Wixom was our vet! They are ranchers, they WORK for a living!!!!! They are a true Morro Bay TREASURE! : )

Unbelieveable…he is proud to report the city received a grant to begin the process of updating our 26-year-old general plan, Irons had nothing to do with gettting that grant.and I guarantee you if he is Mayor for two more years the GP will not get updated.

Irons also had nothing to do with opening up Embarcadero lease negotiations for public input . Show me any public hearing where the Mayor did this. He is taking credit for things he didnt even have anything to do with. Schttz is the one who changed this process on his own after the workshop in March which he also scheduled on his own. Again show me any Council meeting where there is a discussion on changing the process or even scheduling the workshop in March. Wow and he allocated pavement funds in responsnd se to the needs of the community to not only resurfacing streets but also include repair. Wow that is a big accomplishment after it was staff recoemendation. to vote on it. It wasnt your idea it was staff’s. Tell me what has this guy done during his term so far except fire to very compentent emplyees which has now cost the City over a million dollars.

He got the street in front of his house paved.

it was actually the cross street.

You mean that busy one that lots of people use? Details.

Translation…… North Morro Bay streets that have been neglected for year by Yates and Peters finally get paved. Thank you Mayor Irons!

The paving program has been in place for several years,no hair had nothing to do with it. BUT when most all the streets got a slurry coating, which is just an water, oil, sand mix coating, the street in front of his house got dug out,new base rock put down and new asphalt put in,and then it stopped when it should have gone another half block but was new in front of his place

Is his hair situation really any worse than what we had before?

He bought some more commercial property downtown.

NO!!!!

GOOD!!!!!!! Hoping he gets his way and can rezone all of it…perhaps open up a new Roanoke?

He tripled the cost of the sewer project.

He got his wife to give Christine Johnson’s husband a job with the City of San Luis Obispo.

Thay taxpayer is called “buying” your votes!

He hired a new “interim” City Manager who went on a vacation after working for one day.

How lucky can we get to have an outstanding man willing to support us, represent us in Morro Bay, a true treasure of a human being. A new beginning for our City!! Yeah!

I’d comment, but CCN is too busy protecting the Irons Faction….

No thanks, off topic mud slinging.

Some people post comments to get deleted, then cry about censorship.

Please don’t be that person.

Redsoxman, you sound very scared. Nothing to be scared of but a brighter future for Morro Bay.

Don’t know about all that, fishing village, but I do know he kicks ass at his job.

You got it backwards, this ass kicks people that don’t see eye-to-eye with him out to the curb. There’s no place to “agree to disagree” in his administration.

Really? Sounds like there are a lot of people who see eye-to-eye with him, including two other council members. Where does this great fear he instills in everyone come from? According to one poster, he’s a “lil punk”. How does a “lil punk” strongarm and bully so many people into submission?

You’re mistaking “fear” for “distrust”.

This will be very interesting. I know there won’t be anyone sitting this one out. He could win by a hair or get pummeled…

My money’s on a a Solu or two. Or that Wicca gal.

a what? a who?

Either of the Solu’s would bring a whole new, younger, fresher brand of meanness and nepotism to the city. It could be the beginning of the Mean New Guard. However, there would always be the danger of one them pulling a Sara Palin halfway through the term (quitting).

Selfishly, I do love their public meltdowns. Lots of spittle!

The Solu’s already destroyed the Chamber of Commerce and the Visitors center, they might as well wipe out the rest of the city and then turn the place over to the county.

I wish they would turn MB over to the county. Then Irons could go and play tiddly winks with Gibson and Hill.

Solu. That’s the first part of the SOLUtion.

Solu. That’s the first part of Soluble: Capable of being loosened or dissolved.

So how does a comment like this get through the moderator’s admonition about mudslinging? Talk about not sticking to the topic!

Which comment, TP?

Your pro-Irons buddy Diamond went over the edge, his comment was justifiably deleted.

Irons supporters: “It would be terrific if in the next 4 months people could be civil. So, far the opposition has been brutish.”

Liars and Hypocrites.

I agree kevin. Funny how Rough Diamond’s comment wasn’t deemed as “mud-slinging” and therefore deleted.

Because the moderator has a life and can’t be here 24/7 to manage the adults.

Then I add another to the moderation que.

So now another user must have all comments approved before they appear.

Of course, he is going to run again. Would he really want to give up his throne. In addition, as long as he is in power he can continue to conceal the misconduct of his little puppets at City Hall – yes those that assisted him in destroying the former city attorney and city manager. Heir Irons and his concubine make such a pair.

Now, you’ve got to decide – are we a Socialist Regime of comrades? Or a Feudal network of serfs & Lords? Please pick one.

Seems that the former City Attorney and City Manager managed to out us in the current water situation we now have. Relying on State Water was a foolish idea! Now we’ll be paying for it!Previous council decisions would have had the local businesses slurping up water and local citizens parched!

Liar. Having an additional water source hurt the city?

Namecalling? Civility?

Statements of fact are neither ad hominem nor uncivil.

The euphemistic and hyperbolic broad-brush labels coined by Irons against his opponents are truly offensive swipes.

Your’re blaming the water situation on the former City Manager and former City Attorney? Really? REALLY? I’d just LOVE to see any kind of proof that justifies that ridiculous remark…..

Can’t wait to see the list of challengers. Bill Yates already threatened Irons (& us) during the recall furor: “If you go through with this, I’m back.” I guess someone’s gotta represent the Mean Old Guard faction. Bill should be announcing any day now.

Threatened? Seriously? Perhpas it was a promise, but then Iron’s and his comrades feel threatened by all those who oppose their regime.

Lets see how long it takes them to start stalking, and laying in wait for Bill do something they don’t approve of, in an attempt to scuttle his plans to return.

I can’t wait for Bill to sail into the harbor ablaze in the Aloha spirit, putting an end to bad government.

Yes, but not the kind of”ablaze”that helps government, or cognition. Unless the Mean Old Guard can find a way to reverse the aging process between now and then, or deport a good part of the under 40 population of Morro Bay, the new regime has nothing to worry about and can continue to concentrate on the business at hand like they’ve been doing so effectively. The Collective is safe!

Allow me to clear up my use of the word “threat”. It’s like when someone really bad with math offers to do your taxes for you and you say: “please don’t threaten me.” Or, if a very ugly girl says “I am going to come over there and kiss you” – you may say “Are you threatening me?” It’s Smartass for “please don’t do me any favors.” I would love to see Bill and the Mean Old Guard challenge the Regime of Reason.

Unless Yates can garner more than the 20% of the vote, not too worried.

This is the usual exaggeration ploy used by the Irons supporters. Yeah, he “threatened” them, the way Ahnold did when he said “I’ll be back” or Pacino did when he said “Let me introduce you to my little friend”….

Of course it’s exaggerated. That’s their platform.

The Collective is strong!

You’ve got that right comrade, from each according to his ability, to each according to his need…

Voters of Morro Bay, unite! You have nothing to lose but your leashes (I thought ‘chains’ would be a bit strong)!

Uh…no, you have nothing to lose but the very values that once brought you to Morro Bay.

Didn’t really mean it that way, but okay.

Exaggeration is what bullies use. The majority of us base our lives on facts. Would you like some cheese with your whine?
