Cal Poly basketball team makes first NCAA Tournament appearance

March 17, 2014

Basketball_wordmark_1_The Cal Poly men’s basketball team has qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in its 20-year history as a Division 1 school.

The squad did so by winning the Big West Conference Tournament Saturday night in Anaheim. Cal Poly enters the NCAA Tournament with a 13-19 record, the worst among 68 participants.

Cal Poly will play Texas Southern (19-14) in an opening round game Wednesday in Dayton Ohio. The winner will play top-seeded and 34-0 Wichita State in St. Louis on Friday.

The Mustangs entered the conference tournament Thursday sporting a 10-19 record and having lost nine of their last 11 games. Cal Poly then blew out UC Santa Barbara Thursday, edged by UC Irvine on Friday and squeaked out a 61-59 win against Cal State Northridge in the championship game Saturday night.

Wednesday’s game against Texas Southern will tip off at 3:40 p.m. TRU TV will broadcast the game.

What a strange sports town. The Cal Poly baseball team wins a few games and the sports outlets go bonkers. Mission Prep rattles off another championship and it’s headlines. YOUR HOMETOWN COLLEGE HAS JUST MADE THE NCAA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT! This in itself is big news, but the fact that it’s the first time in school history? Nothing? The coverage seems very out of balance. College basketball, and the NCAA tournament are huge, massive events that mean a lot of exposure for the program, even if it is a play-in game that Cal Poly, with their losing record, shouldn’t really even be in. THEY’RE IN AND THEY’RE PLAYING TOMORROW! Yawn?

YES! YES! YES! CP faces a juggernaut in their next game but congrats to the CP team for their first NCAA playoff game.

What a incredible Big West Tournament!! Congratulations, Poly!!! Good luck in the next game!!
