Killer whales appeared in Morro Bay, while humpback whales entangled themselves in nets and crab pots off the Channel Islands. A whale entanglement team has yet to untangle the trapped humpback.
Morro Bay Harbor Patrol supervisor Becka Kelly said the killer whale spotting was the second she experienced in her 14 years on patrol.
“It looks like the killer whales might be either attacking or taking down one of the gray whales,” Kelly said Thursday. “We’ve seen killer whales come through, but I’ve never seen any live action like this.”
The whale entanglement team had been tracking the humpback from Monterey Bay to Santa Barbara. Rescuers say their team is still committed to untangling the whales but are waiting for weather conditions to clear up.
