Armed standoff breaks out at SLO storage yard
June 17, 2014
A standoff between police and an armed man inside a vehicle occurred around noon Tuesday at a San Luis Obispo storage yard.
San Luis Obispo police officers surrounded the man who had barricaded himself inside his vehicle at Derrel’s Mini Storage at 3650 Broad Street. Officers managed to talk the man out of his car and disarm him, Police Chief Steve Gesell said during a homeless services meeting Tuesday afternoon.
Gesell said the man has a history of mental health problems and was being transported to a psychiatric ward. He commended his officers for not letting the standoff morph into a shootout.
“In most cities it’s ultimately a matter of time before there’s a significant use of force,” Gesell said.
