Does character matter Lois Capps?

OPINION By MATT DIES

If it is true that a crisis does not build character and only reveals it, the accident that took the life of my daughter, Mallory, revealed an appalling lack of character on the part of congressional incumbent Lois Capps and her staff.

While Mallory was fighting for her life under the care of the wonderful staff of Cottage Hospital, another staff was performing its own kind of crisis work. Capps is out in front of the camera mouthing her pious concern for my family while her district director, Mollie Culver, is allegedly scheming to get Raymond Morua, another Capps staff member, who was drunkenly driving the vehicle that ran Mallory down, out of jail and into a VA treatment center where his service as a troubled vet might minimize the media damage.

While my family is suffering horribly and facing decisions that no family should have to consider, Capps and staff are thinking only of preserving her exalted position. After all, what is the life of one of the commoners if it might threaten anointed royalty?

Five days into our ordeal, our beautiful and precious gift failed a neurological test, and we hear the term “brain death;” all hope of hearing her laugh, feeling her hug, or seeing that amazing smile again are lost forever. Yes, while we are suffering so, Capps and her intrepid troupe made a 180-degree turn and shift their focus and deny that Morua was representing her office that fateful night that he drank, drove, and caused my child’s death.

“He must have taken the invite off of someone’s desk” is floated by Capps’s office as a theory and excuse, which was clearly rebutted by the string of texts exposed in Peter Lance’s series in the Santa Barbara News-Press. “We were never aware of Morua’s background, including multiple drunk driving offenses, or his hit and run, or his embezzlement conviction” is trotted out as the new position, as if that made any sense at all. My oldest child, Mateo, was drug-tested and background-checked to push carts in Walmart’s parking lot, but to work for Lois Capps, all it takes is good demographics apparently.

Mallory Dies

Mallory Dies

There are certain crater-sized holes in this “we never thought to ask” excuse that have always bothered me. Any time that I have been hired for any kind of job, I have been required to provide valid identification. Morua, at the time of his hiring, could not have had a valid California driver’s license and would only be able to present a basic identification card. This person will be going to different venues and events, and this lack of a valid driver’s license does not raise any red flags in Capps’s office apparently. Nor does the fact that Morua’s fiancée is regularly driving him to events and work raise an eyebrow in this eight-term congressperson’s office. A simple Google search would have brought up an article where Morua talked forthrightly about his issues with PTSD and alcohol abuse.

Next up is Capps’s preposterous public statement that her staff is not sent to events where alcohol is served. It was not uttered in front of a winery, but it might as well have been. Perhaps we can offer you a Cappsatini as direct evidence of the complete lack of credibility in this statement. We do not send our staff to events where alcohol is served, yet as documented in Part Two of Peter Lance’s series, the Cappsatini cocktail party in which donation levels were pegged to cocktails was a Capps fundraiser. In short, since my child was run down by a Capps staffer returning from a holiday party that most certainly was related to his work for Capps, all that Capps and staff concerned themselves with is the upcoming election and how this tragedy might impact their chance to continue the royal reign.

Do not be fooled by the feigned concern, the soft public voice, or her claims of long and loyal service. When this crisis came to her, did she have the fortitude to stand up and say, “We were wrong, and this horrible tragedy is our fault. We didn’t monitor Raymond Morua as we should have. We regret and apologize for our negligence that took lovely young Mallory Dies in the flower of her youth. I know that we cannot turn back the clock and make this tragedy never to have happened, but I personally take responsibility and only want to know how I can help the Dies family and their organization VOW4MAL.”

So Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, I ask you, what type of representative do you deserve? Is it someone whose character points to callous disregard and preservation of prestige and position at any cost? I hope that it is not.

Capps is a colossal failure that is aiding and abetting murder in more ways than one.

Capps is conveniently “forgetting” to disclose that the Obamacare that she voted for has Leftist Eugenics embedded in it.

Absolutely false disgusting demagoguery.

I and more than 3 million Californians now have health care insurance through Covered California…made possible by Obamacare, where it was impossible to obtain coverage before.

Why do Republicans resort to fear and smear tactics that just are not true ?

Many doctors do not accept CoveredCA? If you count on Obamacare as an umbrella you will get drenched.

Well, what do you call a President that RPEATEDLYsaid that people would SAVE about $2500 a year on their medical care, that we could KEEP OUR PLAN, that we KEEP OUR DOCTOR(S) and none of that was true?? I call him a LIAR!!! My health plan I had, if I wanted to keep if after the implentation of Obamacare would have cost us $637

MORE A MONTH and for a family of 4 with a $5,000 deductible was going to run us almost $1500 a month. NOW I had to go to a plan with LESS coverage, worse drug coverage and yet higher premium than what we had BEFORE Obamacare and yet paying OUT OF POCKET a lot more because of the changes in coverage. I’m also PAYING for things that I don’t need like maternity and pedicatric dental!!! Obamacare is a wreck! So when you talk about SMEAR tatics don’t forget that the Democrats and the al’mighty leader of the Democrats were smearing a whole bunch “poo” when they were promoting Obamacare to the American public!!!

Correct, TiaMia. Obamacare is a wreck. I lost my plan, lost my doctor, doesn’t matter what the liar muslim sympathizer in the White House said. Replacement plan much higher deductible, out of pocket, scrip costs went up on even the simple generics, and still can’t find a specialist for a condition despite phone promises that they’ll “email a list of specialists accepting the new plan”. No emails came.

GET IT, PEOPLE? NO DOCTOR FOR ME. I’m running uncovered when it comes to a major medical situation. #%$@$%# the moron liberal Capps who voted lockstep for destruction of American medicine. I offered CASH to my last guy and he said accepting a side payment from me would cost him his practice under the Affordable Care Act. Communism/totalitarianism in medicine, brought to you by exclusively Democrat politicians. I took a big goodbye vase of flowers back to the helpful girls in the office, they all cried, and I got SCREWED out of medical care! FIRE CAPPS. She failed to screen a drunk and somebody is dead for it.

I think Obama fancies himself the reincarnation of muslim conqueror Saladin, behind enemy lines, and Capps fancies herself the Montecito Pelosi; a vapid, limousine liberal goddess telling the rest of us how to live under over-regulation.

Talk about a lazy Dem for sure….ask the tax payers to carry you…classic 47% Voter.

The arrogance and hypocrisy of politicians like Lois Capps can be nauseating. The rules are for the “little people”. They ride roughshod over the ordinary people they claim to represent while their people too often go unpunished for their transgressions and violations. I hope that Ms. Capps and her campaign will have to bear the full brunt of justice for their willful and hurtful action in this matter.

At every company I have worked drinking at company celebrations has ceased – because of the obvious danger that someone will drive drunk and injure themselves or others. It is discouraging that Ms. Capps campaign engages in this “Mad Men,” rooted- in- the- sixties behavior.

As citizens we can register our disgust at the behavior of her campaign by voting for her opponent next Tuesday. She just does deserve to be in Congress!

Matt-

As a father, who lost his daughter in a car wreck I know the deep pain and loss you feel. I wish I could tell you it ends. It doesn’t. It does become less bitter – less biting – and less agonizing. I hope you find the strength and reason to achieve inner peace.

God bless,

CM Phillips

There is a third legitimate option. George Carlin (RIP) can explain, in 93 seconds:

‘Voting for Death: Criminal vs. Criminal’

Linh Dinh

http://www.counterpunch.org/2012/10/03/voting-for-death/

Linh Dinh excerpts:

“America, you have become a nation of enablers and apologists for tyranny and mass murder…

“The Good Old Party spooks the upper and middle classes by threatening, If you don’t vote for us, the Dems will take your hard-earned cash and give it to the freeloaders, crackheads and other miscellaneous losers, while the Democrats, in turn, scare the lower rungs by snarling, If you don’t vote for us, the Republicans will let your retired, diapered ass rot under a bridge, on a piece of cardboard, but lordy, lordy, lordy, *it is already happening, but let us not sweat the details*…

“Each party paints the other as the greater evil, though both are *equally whorish to a military banking complex [I’d suggest: military-banking-congressional] that has wrought so much grief and destruction worldwide, including here. As they offshore your job, they may toss you a free cell phone or allow you to wed your same sex lover, but isn’t it time, seriously, we demand that our money be spent responsibly, for our benefits?

“But no, we can only *beg for small change*, instead of real ones, and *must vote, again, for proven liars and criminals*, and hope, against all evidence, that they won’t impale us this time…

“Already, nearly half of Americans don’t cast ballots in any election, but ***we must make this abstention purposeful, as a clear sign of protest and not an act of apathy***. The world must see that Americans aren’t all deranged and hypnotized as those who cheer and vote for one lying criminal after another. We’re better than this, so let’s prove it.”

Matt,

I can’t imagine how difficult it is to lose your child. I am so sorry. Regardless of your motivation or timing, I don’t blame you for your position, your sadness, and your sentiments in writing this story. It is true, Capps and her team did not respond humanly to the loss of your daughter. That is very sad!

Also sad, I kind of assume our politicians (all of them) would do the same sleazy stuff like this. Unfortunately, the only way you can make it to that level of power is to work the system, cover your a$$ and tell lies along the way. If you fool the people and don’t get caught or get thrown out for being inhumane, you make it to a higher office.

What is with that ad she is running with the opponent’s comments taken out of context? I know that is par for all politicians but that ridiculous ad showing Mitchum is soooo obvious. What if you showed your boss a video like that to get a promotion over one of your colleagues? My boss would laugh and fire me.

That stunt alone literal makes me NOT want to vote for Capps…even though I am not particularly found of Mitchum, either. I get so sick of these politicians. If I behaved like they do, my employer would fire me in a heartbeat. But these people have some special immunity to behaving like the rest of us. It is okay to lie, okay to make up stuff, okay to abdicate responsibility.

How refreshing it would be to have a politician who speaks and acts with authenticity, humility, intelligence and grace? How refreshing would it be if a politician thought for themselves and didn’t always tow their party line? How refreshing would it be if they occasionally went against their personal agenda (or the party agenda) for the benefit of their constituency? How refreshing would it be if when someone loses one of the most precious things in life…a daughter….a politician puts aside their future and reputation and instead becomes human again….comforting rather than deflecting.

I doubt Mitchum is that person either but I know Capps isn’t. Those that I know that could be an amazing politician would never subject themselves to the crap these people have to go through to get elected.

Despite the rigged ‘jungle’ primary system that limits the choices in the general election, you can still write-in a candidate…maybe yourself.

Sure, it would probably be a pyrrhic protest vote, but at least you can get some personal satisfaction while not ignoring your civic duty.

I do question the timing of this opinion piece. Most informed voters are well aware of the incident, were well aware of it at the time of the primary.

It just is a late attempt at guilt by association at this point.

The only thing that matters to politicians is elections.

Anyone who believes otherwise is foolish.

Capps is a sleazy, self-serving, ego-centric opportunist. Capps cares about nobody but herself.

I am sorry for your loss, I cannot imagine the how you feel, even though I have a daughter that I love very much. While I can definitely sympathize with your loss, your anger, I am afraid that I have to question the timing of this heartfelt column you have written. What is your goal in presenting this piece to Cal Coast News, three days before an election? Are you simply pointing out how you feel Congresswoman Capps fell far short of taking responsibility, or are you trying to put one more strike against her in an attempt to sway the election?

If I offend you with these questions, I apologize in advance; I just wonder about the timing and your motivation to wait until now to have this published.

Of course he is attempting to sway the election. It disgusts and sickens him that this heartless pig is in office. Isn’t that clear from the article.

Thank you Matt. I am so sorry about your daughter’s tragic death and the attempted cover-up by Lois Capps.

Matt, my heart felt condolences for your loss.

Groucho Marx said it best…“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.”
