San Jose resident Khiem Nguyen was fishing with three friends at Big Sur’s Soberanes Point on Tuesday when waves swept him off rocks. Rescue teams conducted an eight-hour search Tuesday by boat and air but suspended it due to dangerous conditions.
The search resumed Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. and turned into a SCUBA operation around 11 a.m. Divers found Nguyen’s body just after 11:30 a.m.
Nguyen was the second person to be swept off rocks at Soberanes Point in less than a month. Rescuers succeeded in saving the first person.
Emergency responders say it is difficult to conduct rescues in the area due to the rocky terrain and strong currents.
