Atascadero murder suspect heading to trial
February 3, 2015
An Atascadero man who said he shot his neighbor because he felt an “evil” coming from her is heading for trial in San Luis Obispo Superior Court. [KSBY]
Jury selection begins Tuesday in the murder trial of Mark Alan Andrews, 50, who admitted to killing Colleen Marie Barga-Millbury, 52, in May 2013. Andrews pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity at a court hearing in January 2014.
Three doctors then evaluated his sanity. Two concluded he was insane at the time of the shooting, but one said he was sane.
Andrews previously received a diagnosis of schizophrenia, but he told police in an interview after the killing that he was not taking his medication. He also said he was hearing voices and that he believed Barga-Milbury was a vampire.
On the day of the killing, Andrews drove his car to Barga-Milbury’s house and shot her twice with a rifle. The first shot hit her abdomen and the second struck her head.
