Higginbotham leaves Supervisor race amid alleged bullying

Pismo Beach Mayor Shelly Higginbotham announced Friday that she would no longer be a candidate for the San Luis Obispo County District 3 supervisor seat currently held by Adam Hill. Higginbotham said she is stepping down to focus on her family and her job as mayor.

Nevertheless, multiple sources told CalCoastNews Hill and his campaign have made several public records requests for information on the Higginbothams while dispersing negative claims about her family members.

Higginbotham joined San Luis Obispo Councilman Dan Carpenter, former Grover Beach Mayor Debbie Peterson and Hill in a race for the District 3 seat. The district includes Edna Valley, Avila Beach, Pismo Beach, Shell Beach and Grover Beach and a portion of San Luis Obispo.

In 2012, the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce named Shelly Higginbotham and her husband Dr. Robert Higginbotham citizens of the year.

I say Debbie Peterson. With two smart, likeable Debbies on the Board, one on each side, everybody will be happy. I like Lynn Compton too. In fact let’s get rid of misanthropists Hill and Gibson and have an all-girl BOS.

Focus on removing bully Adam Hill. Pump up your guy or gal, but don’t tear down our team. Both are wonderful candidates and I donated to both. Critical talk may convert a Dan or Debbie voter into an Adam voter.

I didn’t suggest that Peterson was a poor candidate, only that Carpenter is a better one. Both far, far better than Hill.

Shelly, may I encourage you to speak out clearly and boldly on anything the voters should know about Adam? Thanks for your service and willingness to step up to the plate over the years.

Shelly would have been a breath of fresh air compared to the current situation. Anyone who Is running in this county, but in particular in Morro Bay should know that bullying and intimidation are tactics alive and kicking and used in the most recent election.

Fortunately bullying tactics did not work in Morro Bay in either 2012 or 2014. Thanks for calling it to attention for others to learn from!

Actually, I think they did. Mis-truths about contentious council meetings when Yates was probably the most welcoming and congenial chair of a legislative body I’ve seen yet in this county. Irons is not transparent. Irons continues to badmouth previous decisions.

As for Bill Yates, he was a nice man, but unfortunately his masters were the owners of businesses in the Embarcadero. The rest of the city was completely ignored. And he lost credibility with me when he backed up your failed campaign. RIP.

I don’t know whether these allegations are true, or not.


But here’s a perfect chance for the League of Women Voters to put some teeth in their so-called “Civil Discourse” campaign. Does civil discourse extend to how an elected official conducts a campaign? Is it ethical to go after an official’s family?


I hope LWV will investigate the allegations and see whether they’re true or not.

Sources who are afraid to speak out should not be outed by someone they confided in. Instead, we should condemn and oppose a climate where people are not comfortable to speak out for themselves.

That’s a contortion of truth, however, on a decade(s) old story. If Adam were the anti-pot Republican candidate he’d have a leg to stand on, but clearly it’s just bullying and intimidation and persecution tactics. Adam must go.

If memory serves, and it doesn’t always, the doctor was growing. There was no evidence of selling. Considering that he is very conservative he wouldn’t fit the profile of a dealer. Also considering that he’s an opthamologist and that marijuana eases certain eye conditions my assumption was that he was helping patients back in the day before one could get a prescription for it. That’s just speculation; I really have no idea.

Mike – It’s nice you like the family but, your entire post is an apology for not knowing the facts, right? If my memory serves, cultivating a large grove of marijuana without permission from the government is a felony. That was the part that got him in cuffs. Now before everyone begins to toss zig zap bricks I too would “assume” that he was probably growing for any purpose other than to sell it to the recreational market.

I can’t say that I do or don’t like the family; I don’t know them. I met the doctor once socially and had no conversation with him beyond howyadoin? I service on a homeless coalition board with Shelley where I find her to be hard working and very supportive of the cause. Beyond that I know nothing about them other than what I read and hear. My speculation is based on nothing more and I tried to make clear that it was just speculation. I’d suggest that view is at least as valid as calling him a drug dealer which, in my opinion, is exactly where Supervisor Hill was heading with that.

Lots of nice smoke and cover (excuse the pun) but, ’92 is far from ancient history. If the head of house was tried and convicted in federal court and you’re cool with them leading you forward then I’m assuming 1) You’re not a republican or 2) I know your eye doctor.
