A Grover Beach man grabbed and groped a girl at the Arroyo Grande Walmart on Sunday, then fled from several law enforcement officers who were chasing him.
Around 8:14 p.m., Arroyo Grande police responded to a report of sexual battery against a minor at Walmart. The victim and her mother told police a man followed the girl through the store, and at one point, he walked up behind her, pushed into her and sexually groped her, according to the Arroyo Grande Police Department.
When officers responded to the area, they found a man who matched the description of the suspect. The man then ran toward the area of the Premier Inn.
Arroyo Grande officers officers established a perimeter with the assistance of county sheriff’s deputies, Grover Beach police, Pismo Beach police and the Department of Fish and Wildlife. An Arroyo Grande police canine joined the search and assisted officers in the arrest.
Police have identified the suspect as 21-year-old Richard Dering Jr. Following his arrest, police took Dering to Arroyo Grande Hospital where he was medically cleared for booking.
Officers booked Dering in San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of sexual battery, resisting an officer and annoying or molesting a minor. Dering remains in jail with his bail set at $25,000.
