California overpaid employees more than $700,000

February 6, 2016

moneyCalifornia overpaid at least $700,000 to state employees last month. And now the state wants the money back. Approximately 20,000 state employees got too much money in their paychecks.

The state paid employees from $37 to $101 in January for the December pay period, State Controller’s Office spokesman John Hill said.

The error, because the controller’s office did not increase some employees’ medical insurance withholdings, was limited to employees covered by two unions. Those over payed include 12,689 employees in the California Correctional Peace Officers Association and about 7,000 workers in the International Union of Operating Engineers Bargaining Unit 12.

State officials are still attempting to determine the total amount of over payments.

Why are you wasting our time with news like this? It’s not like they are going to let them keep the money. The state will just withhold the overpaid amount on the next paycheck. Not a big deal.

An absolute NON-story. The state payroll is so complicated and the computer programs so cumbersome it is nearly impossible NOT to make a mistake occasionally. Back when I worked for the state I was overpaid a handful of times and the next paycheck they withheld the overpayment. No big deal. Pretty funny how that when I was Underpaid it took them quite a while to pay me back. :)

If you worked for the state you were overpaid all the time.

These workers will most likely have their next few pay checks adjusted for the error. Not everything has to inspire chicken little screeching.

Now, let’s talk about how California has agreed to give undocumented students 0-19 free medi-cal. And go!

They had better raise taxes, and quickly, to fix this mess!

Those of you who put trust in government please understand that this is a tiny mistake in comparison to the daily flushing of our money down the toilet.

More like 700 trillion!

Nope, that’s the underfunded pension system that the taxpayers have to pay.

When they get all the figures right, it will be well over $1M. This should be an easy one time calculation since they isloated it to 2 unions. Just bill them twice in March. Anyone doing software programming will tell you this is nothing. Collect the money owed the State (us taxpayers).. Right is right!

What’s new they are all overpaid anyway.

Well, that’s what happens when you have a “surplus.” Unbelievable!

Not that I approve, but let it go. It will probably cost more than the $700,000 dollars to get it back. Stand up and admit your mistake and move on. The state probably loses that much everyday.

Yes but then to rectify their screw ups they confiscate more money from me and the remaining few Californians who have jobs.

You mean the remaining few 94.2% who have jobs?

Unfortunately, the unemployment statistics do not account for the pesky 94 million people that are no longer considered in the labor force (a record).

Actual unemployment is around 20% – not 5.8%.

Lies, damn lies, and (government) statistics.

Ouch!

“State officials are still attempting to determine the total amount of over payments”

I guess it would be too much to hope that the recipients of said over payment would return said over payment.

Can you imagine what the consequences would be if you ran your checking account in the same manner?

Who the hell is charge…other than a bunch of lunatics?

Jan Marx relation perhaps?
