Poll shows District 3 supervisor seat up for grabs

The San Luis Obispo County’s District 3 race is close, with none of the candidates likely to garner 50 percent of the votes needed to win the June 7 primary election. If no one gets 50 percent of the vote, the top two candidates move on to the November election.

A CalCoastNews poll of registered voters conducted May 14 shows Supervisor Adam Hill with 22 percent, followed by San Luis Obispo Councilman Dan Carpenter at 18 percent and former Grover Beach mayor Debbie Peterson with 13 percent. Almost half of survey respondents, 47 percent, have not decided who they plan to vote for.

CalCoastNews identified each candidate only by name, and not by any other information used to describe them that might influence voters’ choices.

CalCoastNews surveyed 407 District 3 voters on May 14 using automated calls to land lines and cell phones. The margin of error for the survey was plus or minus 5 percentage points.

The bulk of District 3 voters, 56 percent, live in San Luis Obispo. Next in line is Grover Beach at 21 percent, Pismo Beach at 17 percent, rural Arroyo Grande at 6 percent and Avila Beach at 3 percent. District 3 has 788 more Democrats than Republicans. Hill and Peterson are Democrats and Carpenter is not affiliated with a political party.

Three San Luis Obispo County supervisor seats are currently up for grabs, leaving the future direction of the county up to the voters. Aside from the District 3 competition, there is a four-way race for the District 1 seat Supervisor Frank Mecham is vacating and two candidates vying for the District 5 seat currently held by Supervisor Debbie Arnold.

CalCoastNews is also conducting polls for the District 1 and District 5 elections.

Time for a change. Dan Carpenter can beat Adam Hill. If Debbie weren’t in the race Dan could have finished this off in June. But it will happen, if not June then in November. it will happen!

I also what Hill gone. I’m tried of being named as some sort of straw man, to deflect Hill’ s poor upbringing. Fulks and Ochs both know where I live, and both have my phone number, yet neither one had the “gumption” to contact me. The veiled threats and innuendo fell dramatically short in stopping FIRE ADAM HILL, the people demanded better. Now as the time draws near, the county must stand together to dump Hill, Torres, Ochs and Fulks.

Dan Carpenter is a tax fighter and a sponsor of the Central Coast Taxpayers Association. Dan is opposed to any changes to Proposition 13 that affects your home or business taxes.


Dan is also opposed to the newly proposed Self Help County 1/2 cent sales tax.

That would be great if the run-off was Carpenter V. Petersen. I think Hill would drink the Koolaid if that were the case. LOL!

Half the voters have not decided three weeks before the election.


It is vital that the undecided voters are educated through word of mouth that Adam Hill must go.


Just today I got an Adam Hill mailer with a pic featuring Adam, his wife, stepdaughters, and dogs. The ad decried Carpenter’s attacks. What attacks has Dan Carpenter made on Adam Hill’s family?


All Carpenter has done is point out Hill’s pathetic behavior.


Educate your neighbors, tell them to vote for Carpenter or Petersen.


Push Adam Hill down to third place.

Bill, your assessment is fair, but it highlights my concern about Carpenter, “All Carpenter has done is point out Hill’s pathetic behavior.”


That is all Carpenter has done – he has spent valuable time and money attacking his competitor. What he has not done is spend valuable time at the Board of Supervisors or Planning Commission researching and speaking to issues affecting constituents.


Peterson has done that consistently, and has kept her focus on the race, the County and the issues.


Both Hill and Carpenter have a track record for being contentious and have carried that through the race – the “he’s picking on me” theme. Forums and debates have been derailed by their snarling at one another, redirecting the attention from the questions and the issues to themselves, while Peterson has stayed on track, responsive to the constituents.
