SLO Council approves sanctuary city-style resolution

Led by Mayor Heidi Harmon, the city of San Luis Obispo has responded to a purported crackdown on illegal immigration by the Trump Administration with a resolution declaring all people, irrespective of immigration status, welcome in SLO and instructing city staff to not directly enforce federal immigration laws.

However, city officials say the resolution does not run afoul of an executive order issued by President Donald Trump that denies federal funding to sanctuary cities. San Luis Obispo receives federal funds for community development, transportation and public safety efforts.

On Tuesday, the San Luis Obispo City Council unanimously adopted a resolution instructing city employees, including police, to not directly enforce federal civil immigration laws and to not use city funds, resources or personnel to investigate, question, detect or apprehend anyone solely for immigration violations, unless required by state or federal law. The resolution also directs city employees, as well as residents, to report acts of bullying, discrimination and violent hate against suspected immigrants.

Following the council meeting, the city issued a press release stating the resolution does not put San Luis Obispo in the category of sanctuary cities, as defined by Trump’s executive order.

Jurisdictions that merely restrict the use of resources to inquire into, investigate or collect immigration status information are not classified as sanctuary cities under Trump’s executive order, city staff said in the press release. Thus, the city’s resolution does not direct any action that conflicts in any way with the federal law on which the executive order is based, the news release says.

Sanctuary cities are commonly viewed as jurisdictions that refuse to honor detainer requests issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Several California counties are considered to have sanctuary city policies, including Alameda, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Sacramento and San Francisco counties.

In the city’s press release, San Luis Obispo Police Chief Deanna Cantrell gave a statement clarifying SLOPD policy on immigration enforcement.

“As police, our main goal is to ensure public safety,” Cantrell said. “With that in mind, we don’t ask people their status — whether they are considered potential victims, witnesses or suspects. Of course, undocumented immigrants who commit serious and/or violent crimes should be subject to federal immigration laws, but our local police do not have the jurisdiction or legal authority to enforce immigration law.”

Cantrell also said it is city policy to treat everyone equally and to maintain a safe community, building trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement.

I’m embarrassed for you whiners. these are human beings and you use the word “Illegal” as if you’re some patriot.

You never take a stand against speeding, overweight vehicles, expired drivers licenses, pulling mattress labels, misusing wasp spray as a defense deterrent, expired parking meters, overdue library books, wearing white after labor day etc. you single out 1 law and whine, piss and moan about it.

The City Council is acting like so many people these days.they want what they want but without consequences. If the Council had principles, it would have rejected any federal funding.


This story also illustrates how inadequate the local news media is in terms of informing the public of matters being considered by local government. If there was an awareness by the public that the Council was considering this action, City Hall would have been overflowing with outraged citizens. This action really should be challenged.

hmmmmm, so will the City Employees turn a blind eye to American Citizens who BREAK THE LAW when it comes to all their stink’in permits and such you have to get to fart? This has gone way toooooooo far!! Who are these people who are in office? What happens to their common sense? When we keep giving and turning away from making a issue of these ILLEGALS being here ILLEGALLY then they’ll keep coming – what is so hard to understand? I’m a grand daughter of an Immigrant who came here LEGALLY, didn’t speak English. He learned though and become a Citizen!! He had to go through the WHOLE PROCESS. I don’t have much sympathy for the cheaters because I feel they are ONLY THINKING about “their families” when they come here and use our schools – which have been degraded – take advantage of all the free programs they can – which takes away money from the true American Citizens – and have even acted in a way that they don’t even want to become an American by flying flags of their country of pushing their culture down our throats! Boy, I’m disgusted with SLO and City Council what a bunch of wimps who I think are afraid of being called the overused oh my ……the, “r” word! Well, THAT’S been overused every time someone speaks out against ILLEGAL immigration. I don’t care where they come from, Ireland, England, Italy, Mexico, Canada…if you don’t do it under our laws then you’re ILLEGAL – period and shouldn’t be given any of the privileges of a citizen and the Law Enforcement should be able to catch you if you spit on the sidewalk! The IRS doesn’t care that “I’m just trying to feed my family” if I were to avoid paying my share of taxes, right? When are they going to ignore that?

Gee I wonder why this wasn’t done when President Obama was deporting at a record pace. Just more show of a foul and upset left that can’t live with the results of the election. There is a law and a course of legal action that should make these folks think twice. If an illegal alien that has committed a felony and subsequent to that felony is released on bail back onto the streets even though ICE has asked that he or she be held and he or she murders someone the members of the SLO city council can be charged with accessory to murder. I guessing they do not know this but it is the written law as it stands now. They may want to look it up.
