The Tribune and Tom Fulks

OPINION by T. KEITH GURNEE

What is it about this pairing? Since the San Luis Obispo Tribune’s decision some months ago to “balance” conservative and liberal commentary between Andrea Seastrand and Tom Fulks, the Trib seems to have clearly favored the Pavlovian blather of the latter.

The contrast between Seastrand’s measured, calmly-stated conservative views and Fulk’s unvarnished, flame-throwing “hate speak” couldn’t be more glaring. Can’t the Trib find a liberal writer who can make his or her points with just a little less venom?

His latest diatribe wherein he maligned every community in our county is a classic case in point. How do his two supporters on the board of supervisors feel about his open trashing of the very communities they purport to represent? Better yet, how do the voters of those towns tolerate their elected representatives associating with him?

Maybe “nasty” sells newspapers. Perhaps the Trib enjoys that. But Fulk’s screaming vengeance against those he reviles doesn’t do much to further the type of civil discourse we truly need in today’s world.

Despite many attempts to encourage a more thoughtful discourse by allowing a common-sense moderate columnist to provide alternative views to those of the “extremes”, they have only been met with a deafening silence by the Tribune.

So with its apparently declining readership, why does the Trib persist in hanging onto Fulk’s negativity while coddling his extremism? It must indeed be the last gasp of both of them to prove to themselves that nasty sells!

Tom, if you truly hate the Central Coast as much as it appears you do, it’s high time for you to realize that you have outlived your usefulness here. If there is really “something rotten in Happy Town”, you need only look in the mirror to find it.

How many times and ways can Fulks say I hate America? Well as many times as the Tribune lets him.

Gibson said that limited government is bad and the Progressives need to increase government to control “What our communities should look like”. That is code for total control of you and I in every aspect of our lives!

Democrats is that what you want?

Really?

Or is your hand out and you do not want to loose out on the freebies?

TeeItUp

Anyone want to pitch in with me and buy Fulk’s a bus ticket out of this rotten county?

slomark

He wouldn’t take a bus. This type of liberal likes limos.

Mitch C

Falls is a total has been. Does anyone have a map to some liberal country for him to go to … he clearly hates the USA!

Oneohfirst

T. Kieth Gurnee, another candidate for Fallstaff’s witless protection program.

panflash

Hey, Oneohfirst, who are you to criticize Gurnee? You can’t even spell his name correctly.

slomark

Liberal peaceniks have so much hate.

If he hates it so much, why doesn’t he get the hell out of here. Maybe Cuba would be appropriate for him.

panflash

” Maybe Cuba would be appropriate for him.”

Nah- I’m thinkin’ North Korea might be a better fit for him.

1965buick

Every community has it’s problems. Yes he portrays it as if all that exists is problems.

Don’t tune in to http://www.sanluisobispo.com (aka The Tribune) for the very reasons Mr. Gurnee points out. http://Www.sanluisobispo.com blocks me after just a few “views” of their articles with this “kind” offer: “UNLIMITED DIGITAL ACCESS – Sign up now for just $1.99 for your first month of access to sanluisobispo.com, The Tribune Digital Newspaper, and all mobile apps.” No thank you! Anyone know how much The Trib’s website wants to milk viewers for *after* “your first month of access”? For the type of progressive rhetoric The Tribune pushes, it’s just not worth my time even if it was still free.

Worth noting: Two of our neighbors, unbelievably, still have hard copies of The Tribune delivered each morning. For the past several days, perhaps the truck transporting the papers from Fresno to San Luis Obispo has run into some kind of trouble – the papers have been delivered after 7:30am rather than 3:30am, which has been typical. Stellar service!

Kevin Rice

Anyone else notice the TRIBUNE routinely deletes opposing comments to sanitize diversity and dissent from their website?

JordanJ

It appears as a string of negative comments against Tom Fulks are made, the piece is republished starting over again with no comments.

I do find that trashing our community on the week of Fourth of July is pretty telling about Fulk’s mindset. Instead of anger, name calling and attacks, we should come together and respect we have different opinions, but we are all part of this community.

TeeItUp

diversity was created as a goal to destroy a country from within

If you move here then be here and love it here and blend by becoming an American!!!!!

straddle

So, TeeItUp, does that mean we should all live in teepees like the real Americans.

If that’s not what you mean, then please enlighten us with your definition of “American” so we can all conform and blend in.

Jiminy, what ever happened to “land of the free” and “pursuit of happiness”?

avidreader

Well said Mr. Gurnee. The Trib only degrades their reputation by having such hateful writings in their paper.

Rich in MB

Degrading a reputation implies that one exists at the start….that would not be True with the Tribune. It’s credibility went the way of the Russian Election Hack.

tojofay

Oh boy Rich, are you in for a surprise. Please stick around for the ending- it’s gonna be a tear jerker for you.
