SLO Mayor Harmon leads ban on monuments that honor people

Mayor Heidi Harmon

Following objections lodged by San Luis Obispo Mayor Heidi Harmon to a proposed monument honoring President Teddy Roosevelt, the SLO City Council decided on Tuesday to adopt a new policy mandating that monuments honor ideas, rather than people. [Cal Coast Times]

Last year, former SLO councilman John Ashbaugh spearheaded a campaign to honor Roosevelt, the United States’ 26th president, for helping to launch the conservation movement and for once visiting San Luis Obispo. Ashbaugh’s plan called for a bronze statue of Roosevelt by Artist Paula Zima to be placed in Mitchell Park.

Harmon initially responded by questioning why there was a need for more monuments of white men. Harmon suggested there is a nationwide problem in the United States related to racist and sexist monuments.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Harmon said monuments have become controversial and violence has broken out over the maintenance of certain monuments. Harmon also claimed that any person who is worthy of a monument would not actually want to be honored with one.

During the hearing, the council discussed changes to the city public art policy and ultimately decided to direct staff to draft new regulations, which include the mandate that monuments honor ideas, rather than people. Only Councilwoman Carlyn Christianson was opposed to the proposed public art policy changes.

However, numerous members of the public have criticized the Harmon-led effort to ban monuments honoring people. Critics have argued that people should be remembered despite their flaws and that it is possible to erect monuments without promoting racism or sexism.

The public art policy changes will return to the city council at a later date for formal approval.

The Ministry of Truth has finally arrived in SLO.

If Heidi Harmon didn’t exist, George Orwell would have invented her. Ain’t that right Big Sister? Big Sister?

Who else can’t wait for the pink vagina hat statue???

We really need a statue?

When does it stop? I guess it stops when we have completely removed any history of how we got here. At that point we can let our progressives take over and build monuments/statues of a ten foot straw to celebrate our ban on straws, followed quickly by a statue showing other statues being torn down to celebrate our ban on history. GREAT ideas-lets celebrate!!

Ah the New Progressives, the subtractors of freedoms and the deniers of history. An Orwellian future here we come!

Correction: the New Regressives.

Monuments to honor ideas, as opposed to individuals who actualize them profoundly in some way …

Yes, I see it!

As stunning and beguiling as the art piece at the intersection of Marsh and Higuera may be (perhaps it could be relocated to a more worthy place), Harmon’s concept that monuments should honor ideas, could be immortalized there in a monument featuring a gigantic light bulb suspended above the shape of a human head, indeterminate sex or race.

It would be magnificent!

I’m pretty sure it’s primarily people who are coming up with ideas.

Huh? With all the problems in the city and county, she picks this issue? Priorities, please.

The man that deliberately picked out a conservative to honor has to have his head examined. What have conservatives done for ANYONE?

What have conservatives done for ANYONE?

About the same that liberals have.

Teddy Roosevelt was considered a Progressive when he was alive.

If you honestly don’t know of any positive effects done by conservatives you do not know history-or maybe you just choose to be ignorant.

Considering that I fully, loyally, and proudly self-identified as a political conservative for nearly 50 years, I know my history. Including that of the past three presidential election cycles, when conservatives exhorted me to vote for especially crappy candidates whose solutions relied on more, bigger government every time.

The left offers Pepsi and artificial soy milk. What is called the right now offers Coke and artificial almond milk.

I want a party and movement that offer straight tea and REAL milk. Neither exist here … yet.

I didn’t leave the conservative movement. It left me.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

John Ashbaugh for Mayor … come on John , you are a Progressive worthy of leadership with governance experience, plus your heart is in the right place ! You understand our history, culture, and community . This last experience continues to highlight how Harmon doesn’t understand where to use governance to lead rather than to parrot ideology dictated by others. You’ve done a good job , your community needs you now . Please

Really? Don’t you realize that it was John Ashbaugh who endorsed Heidi Harmon for Mayor? Bet he regrets that now…

Do you think we could just for once try someone who isn’t a “Progressive”?

We’d be better off if we started using the correct words for what’s going on. When the “progressive” aims for the same kind of political tyranny our Founders sought to leave behind, that “progressive” is a Regressive.

Ashbaugh is a confused dilettante. Someone seeking attention. One look at the hideous “thing” he championed at the intersection of Marsh/Higuera makes it abundantly clear he’s not suited for public office.
