SLO County coronvirus cases climb to 33

March 23, 2020

More than 158 million Americans have been ordered to stay at home. The national guard has been deployed in California. There is a shortage of beds and medical supplies. And in San Luis Obispo County, coronavirus cases continue to climb, now at 33.

Gov. Gavin Newsom recently estimated that as the virus spreads, California will be short about 17,000 hospital beds. State officials are working to secure thousands of additional beds.

In SLO County, public health officials plan to utilize Cal Poly’s Recreation Center to serve patients if the hospitals reach capacity.

As of Monday afternoon, of the 33 county residents who have tested positive for the virus, two are in the hospital — one in the intensive care unit, three people have recovered and 28 of the infected individuals are recuperating at home.

Cases by county region:

  • 12 in the North County
  • 12 in the South County
  • Seven on the coast
  • Two in the San Luis Obispo area

Three San Luis Obispo County individuals inflicted with the Coronavirus are under 19 years of age, 21 are between the ages of 19 to 64, and nine are 65 and above.

Increases in the number of cases in California are soaring, as of Monday afternoon, there have been 2,162 positive cases and 43 deaths.

Currently, more than 46,145 U.S. residents have tested positive for the virus, and 582 have died.

In addition, the number of people infected by the virus worldwide continues to rise: 381,761 cases with more than 16,558 dead.

My grandfather had a loss of leg function, permanent limp from polio. My mother-in-law had limited hearing due to yellow fever as a child. This virus can cause reduced lung function, a lasting medical effect.

As a investigative news agency, would be very helpful to know who these folks are, where they worked, how was the virus contracted?

Would give us more data on how hard we should self quarantine, if we knew if there was possible exposure to these individuals!!!

Easy answer: HIPPA laws prevent disclosure of confidential medical information.

As for how to proceed:

WE DO NOT HAVE ADEQUATE TEST KITS TO TEST EVERYONE WHO HAS SYMPTOMS, SO ONLY THOSE WITH OBVIOUS RESPERATORY DISTRESS ARE LIKELY TO BE TESTED AND ONLY WHEN THEY PRESENT AT AN EMERGENCY ROOM. ONE SHOULD AVOID GOING THERE UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY TO PREVENT SPREAD OF INFECTION. IT IS A GIVEN THAT MANY MORE THAN HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED HAVE CIRCULATED WIDELY THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY ALREADY.

IF YOU ARE SICK, BUT NOT IN IMMEDIATE DISTRESS, STAY HOME, AS YOU MAY HAVE THE VIRUS, BUT THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH TESTS FOR EVERYONE WHO IS SICK AND THEY WILL SEND YOU HOME ANYWAY, TO PREVENT SPREAD OF INFECTION. CALL YOUR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER FOR FURTHUR INSTRUCTIONS. UNLESS THEY TELL YOU TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL, STAY HOME.

IF YOU ARE NOT SYMPTOMATIC, STAY HOME. YOU MAY BE CARRYING THE VIRUS AND BE UNAWARE DUE TO THE LACK OF SYMPTOMS OR SIMPLY IN THE FIRST STAGE OF CONTAGEON AND UNAWARE YOU ARE INFECTING OTHERS.

IF YOU FEEL PERFECTLY HEALTHY, STAY HOME. EVEN IF YOU ARE VIRUS FREE, STAY HOME. THE ONLY REAL TOOL WE HAVE RIGHT NOW TO COMBAT THE SPREAD IS TO SELF ISOLATE. THIS VIRUS IS “SLIPPERY”, MEANING THAT IT IS MUTATING VERY QUICKLY. IT COULD BECOME MUCH MORE VIRULENT AT ANY TIME AND PLACE. ALSO IT HAS ALREADY SPLIT INTO AT LEAST TWO STRAINS, POSSIBLY MORE. VERY DIFFICULT TO CREATE VACCINES AT THIS RATE. IT SURVIVES ON CARDBOARD FOR AT LEAST A DAY AND METAL AND PLASTIC THREE DAYS. SURFACES ON AN INFECTED CRUISE SHIP TESTED POSITIVE AFTER 17 DAYS. ALL WE CAN DO AT PRESENT TO PRESERVE THE LIVES OF THE VULNERABLE AND AVOID PERMANENT LUNG DAMAGE TO VIICTIMS IS TO ISOLATE AND STOP THE SPREAD. FURTHER MUTATION AND REINFECTION IS ALSO POSSIBLE. SO STAY HOME.

THE LONGER PEOPLE KEEP CIRCULATING AMUNGST THEMSELVES, THE LONGER THE DAMAGE TO THE ECONOMY AND OUR SOCIAL STRUCTURE CONTINUES. THE WORSE THE STRAIN ON OUR HEALTH CARE. ITALY DIDN’T LOCK DOWN SOON ENOUGH AND THEIR HEALTHCARE SYSTEM, RANKED 3RD INTERNATIONALLY, WAS TERRIBLY OVERWHELMED, MANY WHO NEEDED CRITICAL CARE SENT HOME TO DIE, BASICALLY. AMERICA RANKS 37th. REALISTICALLY, THAT IS NOT PUTTING US WELL PLACED TO DEAL WITH WHAT IS HAPPENING.

WE ARE LUCKY TO LIVE IN A STATE WHERE OUR GOVERNOR PLACED US ON LOCKDOWN BEFORE IT BECOME COMPLETELY OUT OF HAND. THAT HAS PROVEN THE BEST STRATEGY INTERNATIONALLY AND WILL BE THE BEST, SAFEST AND QUICKEST WAY OUT OF THIS. I WISH THIS WAS BEING DONE ON A FEDERAL LEVEL IMMEDIATELY, TO PROVIDE THE BEST AND QUICKEST RESPONSE AND RECOVERY USING THE BEST MEDICAL KNOWLEGE WE HAVE AT THIS TIME.

PLEASE STAY SAFE. STAY HOME.

Francesca, Thank you

Those are big numbers, but if put into “perspective” …. The Republican slush fund for corporations total though is 500 billion. Your numbers were big but millions, not billions.

Let’s bail out cruise lines who don’t fly our flag though.
