Is San Luis Obispo County willing to kill us?

OPINION by JERRY BUNIN

No matter how hard I try, I can’t stop being extremely angry that local government is trying to assign some economic value to my life.

My life is priceless. So is yours. Government shouldn’t be willing to kill me. Yet it is now the official position of local government that public health is no longer the top priority in fighting COVID-19. It is now being balanced with reopening the economy.

Official documents regularly admit that that position will cause more people to get infected and die.

When you voted, did you agree to give local officials the power of life and death over you, your family, friends, co-workers and everyone else? I didn’t and won’t.

It is stupid, dangerous and completely wrong for San Luis Obispo County officials to be working so hard to jeopardize our lives in order to restart the local economy prematurely. Of course, it is wildly premature – no vaccine, woefully inadequate testing, continuing shortage of medical equipment and thousands of people dying every day.

Mary Shaffer and I have tried to buy face masks for a month. Our orders never get filled or mailed to us. We wear bandanas as if something I used to sneeze into is my chief line of defense against a global killer. How dumb is that?

Here is my plan. Every government official who approves reopening the economy in the next few months should be required to volunteer that their entire family and everyone who works for them will serve as guinea pigs to see if their plan works. If they get sick, too bad! Whose fault is that?

I am going to read the county plan when it is released, allegedly early next week. However, my efforts will be useless. It will only make me angrier. No elected official cares. They already made a decision.

County supervisors and mayors have already asked Governor Newsom to allow them to ease restrictions before the plan is finished or approved or publicly released so we could comment on it. In other words, my opinion and yours and regardless what is in the plan, a decision has already been made.

That is offensive – bad decision-making, bad government, idiotic and grounds to recall them.

Every poll you see shows that 70 to 80 percent of the public opposes loosening the restrictions. An AP poll released today reported that 95 percent of Democrats and 78 percent of Republicans believe the restrictions in place are about right or don’t go far enough.

Who do our elected officials represent? How do they know what the majority of us want?

Everyone one who goes out while restrictions are still in place is seeing dozens of people who are not wearing face masks, are not following social distancing guidelines, and are so selfish that they have willfully chosen to kill people.

I am also going a keep a list of every local business that opens when it should not, and I will never go to that store ever again. If if doesn’t value my life, I don’t value that business.

PS: I don’t respond to Trump supporters or people who think objective news reporting or polls they don’t like are fake.

A lot of people really don’t like my opinion because a lot of the time, I see both sides.

Same goes here. Even if you consider zero economic consequences, people are going crazy. In China, they had the capacity to force people indoors. Here, I don’t think that’s possibly. Even if you brought out the National Guard and/or other military, it would be mayhem.

Now, with the economic consequences, the government doesn’t have the capacity to keep giving us money until this goes away, if it ever does. As a nation, we are broke. At some point, there is no more money. Even if everything resumed as ‘normal’ today, I would anticipate millions more becoming homeless and financially insecure.

So, the only alternative or reasonable decision to all this is that you have to resume so parts of daily life and try to gradually return to economics. Which is what they’re doing, at least here in Caifornia, they aren’t saying hey everyone go back to doing what you were doing with no precaution.

It’s hard for everyone Jerry, that I firmly believe.

Feel free to quarantine yourself indefinitely .

Chill out, Jerry. Just drink some bleach or shine a UV light down your throat. Oh, wait, I was just being sarcastic.

Stop Jerry, you are just embarrassing yourself by coming across as a bitter, uninformed, left wing radial. The polls you cite are not authentic and designed to rile. The most recent scientific studies have shown that the virus has already spread at least three times the projections. That tells us that the mortality rate is less than the annual flu outbreak. The local government has implemented a quick response and is working hard at a measured return to normalcy. Removing the quality of life for everyone and trying to unnecessarily lengthening the pain is unconscionable. Only a numb-nut throws a verbal tantrum and then does want to talk to those with opposing views about it. This should not be a political issue and truly should remain a public safety and human rights issue.

I couldn’t agree less.

Jerry , time to take a deep breath and pause . Nobody is trying to kill you , and you will be fine . Life must go on , and if you listen to the SCIENCE , stay indoors and follow the rules , you will be OK . Remember , this is NOT small pox, Ebola , Marburg or Black Plague . And this small little virus has infected probably millions in California. The panic and stress you express are far more dangerous to your health in the long run than this nasty virus. Peace

Sick shirt.

That thing almost Huff and Doback level

Every life does have a price. If we go for 100% perfection to save every “priceless” life, our economy will never come back and far more people will die from economic devastation, depression and related illnesses. Not to mention we’ll all be speaking Chinese soon enough as our country becomes bankrupt and becomes ripe for taking over. We need to open up, while protecting our most vulnerable as best we can.

Jerry, you have a choice to stay home. No one is forcing you to go out.

And I am saying this as a part of the vulnerable group, at 64 years old. I want business up begin opening up, and I will continue to take responsibility for keeping myself protected. You won’t see me out in restaurants, but if other, younger people wish to good for them.

Finding your bio online, I would imagine you are the type of guy who wants to see mom and pop businesses beat the big boxes. If we don’t open up, all you will have is Costco, Walmart and Amazon. Small retail businesses will be killed and won’t come back. Have you ever owned a business, Jerry? I doubt it. If you did you’d know losing the business you put your heart and soul into can kill you even easier than COVID-19.

Jerry

If you are afraid of Covid19, you have the ability and Freesom to self-isolate. If others are not afraid they have the Freedom to work to support their families and to pay the taxes to support the Community. Freedom means being responsible for yourself and letting others have the same Freedom.

OK Rich put down the $250,000 to cover your hospitalization costs in advance. Don’t exercise your freedom at the expense of the public health care system.
