Coronavirus cases surge in San Luis Obispo County

June 12, 2020

Amid large public protests and the reopening of more businesses, San Luis Obispo County has seen an increase in newly confirmed coronavirus cases. The county, however, does not disclose tracking information to the public.

While the county discloses the general location of most newly confirmed cornavirus cases, it is not reporting suspected infection sites.

In San Luis Obispo County, during the past three days, there have been 18 newly confirmed coronavirus cases, or six per day. Of those; six were in Atascadero; two each in Nipomo, San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande; and one each in Paso Robles and Morro Bay. There were four cases in non-designated areas.

Of the 317 confirmed coronavirus cases in SLO County, 279 individuals have recovered, and one has died. Of those still suffering from the virus, there are two people in the hospital in intensive care, and 35 recuperating at home.

Cases by city:

  • Paso Robles — 123
  • Atascadero — 46
  • Nipomo — 31
  • Arroyo Grande — 26
  • San Luis Obispo — 23
  • CMC — 11
  • Templeton — 10
  • Pismo Beach — 9
  • San Miguel — 9
  • Morro Bay — 8
  • Other county cases — 21

As of Thursday afternoon, there have been 143,505 positive cases, and 4,941 deaths in California.

Currently, more than 2,089,825 U.S. residents have tested positive for the virus, and 116,035 have died.

In addition, the number of people infected with the virus worldwide continues to increase: 7,599,647 cases with 423,887 dead.

In was called a liar below by someone who did not see the briefing I saw. On June 11th, the day the cases rose by 11, in the clip that accompanied the release of the info on another news site, Dr. Borenstein said what I quoted. “Of the 14 new cases, 13 were from direct contact with a known case, living in the home with a known case., etc. We are working on the origin of one case…” I went back a couple of hours later and in the place of that clip is one where she is explaining the increased availability of testing…the original clip is nowhere to be found.

The link below by the person who called me a liar is to the press conference on the 12th, NOT the one I was referring to. I don’t have the inclination to do so but maybe someone should look into who told her to change the message in the presser on the 12th!

Holy Cow! We have 317!?!!?! cases? Our tiny county of only 283,000¹ people are surely DOOOOMED™ – of that I have no doubt!

I mean, a ratio of 317:283,000 is a MASSIVE 0.1%¹ I mean, shoot, it might even SURGE to 0.2% one day soon! Thankfully, only 0.000035%¹ of us has died to this PANDEMIC disease. I’m sure if we hadn’t killed most of our economy and asked people to wear face diapers, that number surely would have SKY-ROCKETED to 0.00005% or MORE!

I love numbers in a vacuum. Really sets the tone, doesn’t it? OK, /sarcasm over. HP (stole that from Shocked in MB) can now return to their new normal.

¹ Numbers based on census.gov‘s population estimates for SLO County as of July 1, 2019 (V2019) where they estimate 283,111 people.

Died with. Not necessarily of.

Congrats to the protesters–aided and abetted by Mayor Harmon–that ignored social distancing and that again closed downtown businesses {at a time they were just trying to recover from the COVID-19 lockdown} for continuing the spread of the virus…

“Cases surge…”

Zero new Deaths. 1 Total.

Only two people in the hospital.

Yes, let’s fling away our rights and cower in fear because thousands of tests are showing that the vast majority of people still alive have survived Covid.

A better, headline should read:

“After 3 months of a global pandemic 99.998% of the population survives.” That’s much more truthful than “Cases surge.”

I did not see the press conference but I do guarantee that what KAG2020 said about home transmission will not be the message we hear. The HP (Hysteric People) will be running around talking about the sky falling and the need to go hide in the houses again (only after verbally harassing one or two tourists for causing all this).

I watched the press conference and the health department said they were very encouraged because all of the new cases, with the exception of one, were from direct in home contact with people who already had it. They are still researching one case but as of now, NONE of the cases were community transmission.

Why lie?

I watched the press conference. Never were the words ” very encouraged because all of the new cases, with the exception of one, were from direct in home contact with people who already had it.” uttered. Never.

In the 7 days before the press conference, there were 33 new cases.

County Health Director Dr. Penny Borenstein : “We continue to be concerned about importation into our county and the types of events we’ve seen in many different sectors-beachgoers, rallies, etc.” This is an exact quote form the press conference.

Anyone can see a replay of the press conference here:

Why lie?

They day the number went up by 11, I watched Dr. Borenstein’s presser and what I said above is EXACTLY what she said. Don’t be a jerk.

It was the briefing attached to the release of info on June 11th when the cases increased by 11. Surprisingly, or not, that briefing is nowhere to be found right now. Hmmmmmm…might have been too encouraging?

Either way we are doing well compared to other spots.

The surge comes from increased testing, not necessarily from an increase in the rate of infection.

That’s your assertion. Ca you prove that’s thee case?

It’s called an opinion… but if they didn’t test anyone there would be no new confirmed cases would there?

Yea, verily, I canst!

I agree. My mother is a nurse in Santa Maria. She wasn’t tested until the past 2 weeks. Two negative tests for the active virus and a positive test for the antibodies. She had it mid February weeks before the shutdown.

How can you insinuate infection sites and then in the next breath state you have no idea where the infections took place because there is no publicly available data?

Wow, that is really a surge! I wonder if there will be any people left in SLO County at this rate in About 50,000;years there will be no one left.
