California air board agrees to phase out gas cars by 2035

By JOSH FRIEDMAN

The California Air Resources Board voted on Thursday to mandate that, by 2035, all new cars and light trucks sold in the Golden State be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs).

Automakers, but not car dealers, will have to comply with the rule adopted by the Air Resources Board. The rule will apply to cars, pickup trucks and SUVs and will only cover new vehicle sales. Both electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will count as ZEVs.

The regulation will incrementally phase out gas-powered cars, pickup trucks and SUVs sold by automakers in California. By 2026, 35 percent of the cars automakers sell in California will need to be electric or hybrid vehicles. The threshold will rise annually, increasing to 521%, by 2028, 76% in 2031 and 100% in 2035.

Currently existing vehicles will remain legal to own and drive in California, according to the Air Resources Board. Regulators adopted the rule phasing out sales of new gas-powered cars in line with an executive order issued by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

“Once again California is leading the nation and the world with a regulation that sets ambitious but achievable targets for ZEV sales. Rapidly accelerating the number of ZEVs on our roads and highways will deliver substantial emission and pollution reductions to all Californians, especially for those who live near roadways and suffer from persistent air pollution,” California Air Resources Board Chair Liane Randolph said in a statement. “The regulation includes ground-breaking strategies to bring ZEVs to more communities and is supported by the governor’s ZEV budget which provides incentives to make ZEVs available to the widest number of economic groups in California, including low and moderate-income consumers.”

California’s regulation has drawn rebuke from many critics, including Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

“Ridiculous!” Abbott tweeted. “Banning gasoline-powered vehicles will hurt all Americans. No wonder so many people from California have moved to the Lone Star State.”

Gov. Newsom replied in a tweet, “I won’t be taking cues of what is ‘ridiculous!’ from a guy trying to convict doctors of life in prison for providing women reproductive care.”

Environmentalism (or Eco-Fascism) is the new home for the Marxist police State.

Can you elaborate please.

Fascism and Marxism not mutually exclusive? Wow! Ever read any history?

Anyone with garage space start buying used cars now, especially light trucks, store them correctly and in 13 years they will be worth a fortune!

People will just buy cars from out of state. Of course, there will likely be some horrendous fee for doing so after that becomes obvious to our geniuses in Sacramento. I’d REALLY like to hear their plans on upgrading our grid to the point where it can actually serve all these new electric cars. My guess is that it will be “you peons take public transportation”, sort of thing in the mode of Newsom and the French Laundry mask debacle.

What authority do they have to dictate to us what we can and can’t drive! This should be put to the people for a vote just like tax increases and other bills that directly affect our lives. Newsoms stupid remark about the abortion issue has nothing to do with vehicles. Ground breaking ways to bring ZEV’S to counties is not hard if you give them no choice. This green no gas, oil solar/wind only stupidity needs to stop. You can merge the gas/green together but green can’t stand alone.

Let’s be accurate, this is a DICTATE and provides the consumer with LESS choices for personal transportation.

This state better start building new clean power plants to charge all the EV’s after commuters get home from work and the sun goes down and the wind stops blowing.

Idiots

When did CARB get that much power? I don’t remember electing any of these people. This $hit has to stop.

Appointed by Newsom, who has already won two landslide elections—61% of the vote in the 2018 regular election and 62% voted against the recall. Some are holdovers from the Brown era—he also won landslides. Newsom will win by just as much this year. This is what the majority of California wants. Still a democracy, after all.

Sorry. It’s not like gas-powered cars will go away in 2035. At least 16 million or more new combustion engine cars will be sold in this state by the time this regulation goes into effect.

Ford and Chevy, as well as most of the foreign brands, have already been gearing up for this eventuality. Power structure is key and that will be the hard part, but, this is America, the most inventive nation in the history of the world.

If we meet these deadlines, we may actually avert the worst consequences of climate change.

Cool another “bold ” move by California politicians that they sign up for but don’t have to deliver on, I’m sure they will be retired out of state by the time this law takes effect.
