SLO County Government Center to be named for Katcho Achadjian

The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution on Tuesday designating the San Luis Obispo Government Center the “Katcho Achadjian Government Center San Luis Obispo County.”

Achadjian was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 1998 and served as the chair in 2001 and 2006. He served on the board for 12 consecutive years.

Achadjian, best known for serving three terms on the California State Assembly, died in 2020 at 68 years of age.

Passionate about San Luis Obispo County, Achadjian was a man known for getting things done. Achadjian was a proud man and rightfully so, considering his life’s accomplishments.

Born in Lebanon to Armenian parents, Achadjian immigrated to the United States in 1971 and became a U.S. citizen in 1982. After his graduation from Cal Poly, Achadjian opened several businesses in the South County.

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to rename and dedicate the county building to the “Katcho Achadjian Government Center San Luis Obispo County.” Outside signs will be updated and a dedication sign created.

Katcho operated a great gas station. But his politics mostly sucked. He always voted against the environment, nearly always siding, with private business interests at the expense of the general public. He was also the leader of a multi million dollar boondoggle in Oceano, where millions of dollars were spent for a so-called community center, with no provisions for funding the operation of it. Therefore the multi million dollar facility was turned over to a school district for administration offices, and Oceano remains without a community center. He was also an unapologetic promoter of Donald Trump, supporting his presidential campaign, even after it was clear that Donald Trump was a lying crooked SOB who hates democracy.

Katcho was a nice guy and had good etiquette and I guess that’s one of the reasons he got away with so much crap.

Katcho was a friend. I remember him from the days before he ran for office. He was a good man, low-key, always listened before he spoke and never denigrated anyone who disagreed with him, and I often did. Nevertheless, as a longtime Democrat, i voted for him every time he ran. I knew he would do the right thing for me, as a business owner, and the rest of the community.

Katcho did exemplify the “American Dream”. He set an example for those who want to succeed, an example to follow for the many natural born citizens, who are gifted and wonder why they are having difficulties. Sad to say but statistically foreigners do very well in this country because they already know they can.

Katcho was a very kind, generous and wonderful man. And did a great job as an elected official!
