PG&E seeking another rate hike, this one for Diablo Canyon

December 24, 2023

By KAREN VELIE

In response to regulators permitting Diablo Canyon nuclear plant in Avila Beach to continue producing energy through 2030, PG&E has provided notice it will need to raise rates for the third time in less than two years.

In November, the California Public Utilities Commission approved a proposed $13.8 billion rate hike. That approval is in addition to a $2 billion rate increase starting in March.

PG&E recently asked regulators to keep the Diablo Canyon Employee Retention program active, which would mean a third rate hike.

After agreeing to shut down the nuclear power plant in 2025, PG&E received backing from both federal and state officials earlier this year to extend the operating life of Diablo Canyon through 2030, with a goal of providing Californians electric reliability. The nuclear plant provides nearly 10 percent of California’s electric power.

My thought is that keeping the Diablo plant open should stabilize the rates not increase the rates, then again we are talking about a placed named Diablo. Maybe there needs to be a name change for a supplier location named Devil?

When you go to war on energy just like any war costs will rise uncontrollably….

The cost of all energy is rising fast so don’t act surprised…

Pg&e wanted to close Diablo, but the state’s poor planning and insistence on green power, or lack there of, essentially forced them to stay open to avoid having to import power from other states which is only available during times of surplus. Governors are not worried about anything beyond their next election term, evident by every decision they make= horrible long term outcomes for all of us that live here. If the state would not flip flop all the time it would have saved rate players a decent amount.

It seems if you have enough money to line the palm of others you will always be in business. The minimum raise gets raised and the people keep making less money to live on no bailout for them !!!

Does anyone think this would not happen? Must not realize that nuclear— produced by ancient equipment— is the most expensive form of energy generation. Oops!

And the City of San Luis Obispo wants every building in town retrofitted to be all-electric in the name of saving the planet. Can’t wait to see those new electric bills!

15 years ago my electric bill was $550 per month, then I put in solar…. my bill has been ZERO. Nice!

If you were paying that much 15 yrs ago you were running a business or had a house 10 times the size of the average home as that was unheard of then?

Another rate hike to cover their incompetence and lack of accountability. We’re already paying rate hikes for the wildfires their failed equipment started in northern California thanks to the ties in political and union support of the PUC and Governor Newsom.

And we had a rate hike when they were closing Diablo to offset the lose of tax dollars to public enities who refused to adjust their budgets.

Absolutely insane!
