Being a Palestinian-American student during a genocide

OPINION by CATIE HADDAD

I spent much of the first three years of my life at my teta and jidu’s home in San Luis Obispo. In their backyard, they had a large garden with every fruit and vegetable variety imaginable. As my jidu and I would walk around the garden identifying different plants, I noticed everything from cherries, figs, grapefruit, and watermelon to avocados, zucchini, and edible flowers that he would incessantly encourage me to try.

One summer, jidu chopped down one of the garden’s palm trees for the heart of palm, something my 9-year-old, suburban Californian self found both strange and exciting.

My teta and I would spend hours searching the patio for ladybugs as my grandparents’ pomeranian, Jolie, played with her toys. When I think of their garden now, I feel grateful that they were able to have a sliver of homeland in their California backyard–– that for a second when they woke up and looked out the window in the morning, they would be able to imagine they were not in San Luis Obispo, but instead were in Baghdad or Haifa.

When I think of my teta and jidu now, I think of the way my mixed identity has allowed me to grow up without certain Western biases. My jidu was Iraqi and Muslim and my teta was a Palestinian-Lebanese Christian, but to me, even though I was half white and American, they were simply my grandparents.

In their garden and at their home, they taught me how to look at mundane objects and moments with tremendous love, curiosity, and humanity. Now, I advocate for Palestine and for the universality of human rights because of this love––my love for humanity has fueled my belief that if everyone had access to the information I have used to learn about Palestine, they would naturally reach the same conclusions as I have.

They would come to view Palestinians not as a population of terrorists, but as a people who have been occupied, displaced, and terrorized for years in their ancestral homeland. They would see Palestinians as human beings who deserve to live as much as anyone else. They would mourn the deaths of Palestinians as they do the deaths of Ukrainians. They would also come to learn, I believe, that Palestinian resistance is fueled by Palestinians’ profound love for their land and their culture, which are inextricably linked.

Opening their eyes and hearts, they would no longer see those tending to thousand-year-old olive trees as the aggressors, but rather those bulldozing them.

Over the past three months, I have felt around me a growing sense of cognitive and emotional dissonance. It is difficult to remain socially and academically engaged in a reality where my ethnic identity circumscribes the feelings I’m allowed to express. I often think that if I was not Palestinian- or Arab-American – if I was Ukrainian or from another ethnic group whose pain the West views as legitimate – the only thing I’d be doing right now would be grieving and resting.

This is not my reality. Instead, I must first attempt to assist my peers in recognizing my humanity and the humanity of my people.

I have put my thoughts on this page to process what is happening and to bring others into this processing. Every day, I think about different avenues and ways of getting my peers involved in the Palestinian liberation movement. I think to myself, Palestine might not feel like a natural cause to support for everyone, but I can show them why it is.

I will tell those interested in environmentalism about the ongoing destruction of olive trees, the rampant herbicide attacks unleashed on Palestinian land both pre-and-post-2023, and the weaponization of resources as tools of ecocide. For those who care about women’s rights, I will tell them about how women in Gaza have been taking pills to suppress their menstrual periods because they can’t get sanitary pads due to the siege, or that miscarriages in Gaza have increased 300% over the recent months.”

Each day as I ruminate through these mental exercises, I pose numerous questions to myself: Which is more bearable–violently compromising my morals, my integrity, and my humanity while willingly enabling a genocide in the process, or speaking up and losing a job or friends?

When someone asks me and my peers someday what we were doing during this time, will we feel proud answering “nothing, our hands were tied”? Who has tied our hands, and why can’t we help each other to untie them?

My jidu chopped down the palm tree in his garden to see its heart and its core and to share them with others, knowing that this tree would grow back because he would nurture and tend to it. Right now, I am asking you to perform a similar act of labor and of nurturing: I ask you to cut through some of the defensive tissue that might be preventing you from thinking about, talking about, and advocating for Palestine.

Getting to the heart of this can only be done through love, curiosity, and humanity. It will at first feel strange, but it will also feel exciting, and when we tend to each other during our collective regrowth, we will be a taller and greater force than ever before.

I am so disturbed about this I have to comment again. Israel is the sacred homeland of the Jews. Muslims invaded. They are the colonizers. Muslims in the Middle East are taught to hate the Jews and that Israel should be destroyed. Israel declared independence and the Arabs conducted a true genocide. Oct 7th was an incredible atrocity and you being a woman should be disturbed by systematic use of rape on women and children. Frankly your article is so insensitive and disturbing it is beyond belief.

Once again the british goverment colonial withdrawing screwed up the world when they abandoned the midle east.

Creation of israel was an invasion. The palestinians were kit out by force.

Same story, shiite against sunni, jews against muslim, etc.

People think that israel is validated by the scriptures! Stop using the bible as a weapon

I will have welcome the jews in usa.our country is big enough, they could have they own state here in america

,no, we put them in an impossible situation, with a permanent target on theire back

This letter is great and sincere, lets applaud her courage!

Lets not forget that she publishs it under her name.

She accuses Israel of genocide and you don’t see anything wrong with that? You have no knowledge that Jews have a three thousand year connection with the land? You have no idea that Arabs were told to leave, that they were not forced out except when Jews were attacked or felt threatened? Did you know that Arabs force a million Jews to flee? And the most incredible thing is that the Arabs are hate to Jews from the moment they leave the womb and you seem not to know that either. Her article is a disgrace for someone who wants to practice law. You have to know all sides of an argument and make a complete case.

This comment section is crazy… a member of our community is speaking out. Didn’t even mention support of Hammas…

You’re all parrots.

Imagine if you god-fearing Republicans were cast under the same light, merely being from a liberal state like California means you’re communist antifa who deserve the gallows in the eyes of other God-fearing Republicans?

All good stuff. I love, loving thy neighbor

So in your California/America, it’s unacceptable to have a differing opinion. I know that’s what the Left teaches. What about loving the Jews?

Why must everything be brought back to republicans and democrats? Not germane to this issue or comments at all. Deserve the gallows? Pump the brakes son.

I remember when immigrants came to America to become AMERICANS, seems for the last 25-30 years they come here for the benefit and benefits of being in America and push their agenda and mother country before America’s interest.

You are exactly right. They just want all the tax money and all the free government benefits they can get. They’ll stab America and Americans in the back when necessary. Their loyalties lie with their home countries, not with America.

Two quotes:

“If the Arabs put down their weapons today, there would be no more ‎violence. If the Jews put ‎down their weapons ‎today, there would be no ‎more Israel” Benjamin Netanyahu.

“When peace comes we will perhaps in time be able to forgive the Arabs for killing our sons, but it will be harder for us to forgive them for having forced us to kill their sons. Peace will come when the Arabs will love their children more than they hate us.” Golda Meir

Two simple statements that trump your wordy apologist letter for terrorism. Your freedom fighters, Ms. Haddad, could have had peace and their own thriving country decades ago. But chose terrorism instead. Israel carved a slice of the desert into a thriving country. Arafat and those that followed chose ignorance, poverty and hatred. And that is why there is NO ARAB COUNTRY, none, that want Palestinian refugees in their borders.

VERY VERY WELL SAID!!!!!

The only factual relevance to your statement are the two Israeli quotes, the rest of it is non-sense. Israel is not a sliver of desert, most of it is on the coast. The Arab nations desire the Palestinians to remain on their lands and to have the right to return to their homes which have been taken from them with violent acts committed in the Nakba and continuing today. Palestinians have been brutally slaughtered, their homes bulldozed, their olive groves destroyed or taken over by Israeli settlers. Your cavalier use of the term “terrorism” is misplaced.

How many centuries have the Jews been targets of the Arab and other countries. Look back to before Christ. The Jews suffered from pogroms in the Middle East in the 1930s & 40s. In Medieval times Jews were forced into segregated quarters and forced to wear distinctive clothing. The paid special/extra taxes. In the 1800s they were moldered ritualistically in Syria. Many were saved only when they converted to Islam. The murders spread though the Middle East & North Africa in 1810, 1850 & 1875, Damascus in 1840, 1848, 1890, Beirut in 1862, 1874, Jerusalem in 1847, Cairo 1844, 1890, 1901-1902, Alexandria in 1870, 1882 and 1901. In the 1930s and 40s there wee attack’s on Jews in Iraq & Libya. I could name more if you care or perhaps you could educate yourself.

Unfortunately, nothing you have “educated” on is germane to the topic the article addresses. Future feeble attempts to spread your propaganda disguised as education should at least be narrowly tailored to the subject matter addressed by the article.

History proves that Israel belongs to the Jewish people. But the left-wing media and radical pro-Palestinian voices are force-feeding the world a false narrative that Israel is the aggressor.

Dear Catie Haddad,

A very warm and fuzzy tale you spin. I’m sure you will be a very successful lawyer defending criminals by painting a picture of niceties and ignoring the crime. But you might want to work on jury selection as many Cal Coast News readers are well informed, as you can see by the intelligent comments below, and not so easily swayed.

You can put lipstick on a pig but it’s still a pig.

Very well written! Your personal story is moving and devoid of propaganda. You state it well; those who support state sponsored murder will always justify their actions with dehumanizing name-calling of the innocent humans killed (Palestinians) in this case and historical reasons why they are so justified (holocaust). As we all know, the Palestinians had absolutely nothing to do with the horrific holocaust. The erroneous reference is nothing short of a stated reason for the extermination of a class of human beings. I’m happy that you’re in the class of over 72% of young Americans who don’t support our current administration’s policies on the indiscriminate eradication of Palestinians. The October 7 Hamas attack was indefensible and barbaric. It’s simply not a rational justification for entering a hospital and murdering people as has been reported today and the many war crimes committed by the Israeli government. A country that follows the ideals of democracy believes in the rule of law. Israeli actions in committing crimes of war establish that it follows an ideal that goes against democratic principles. I applaud your efforts to shed light on this tragic genocide with your compassionate article.
