Cal Poly offers emotional services for students upset over election

Concerned that university students at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo would need help coping with the presidential election, Cal Poly offered counseling and psychological services. At least one teacher canceled classes to allow students time to process.

On Nov. 5, Cal Poly Counseling and Psychological Services offered a Zoom decompression session to help students “experiencing election day stress.”

Then, on Nov. 7, the campus provided refreshments, relaxing exercises and one-on-one counseling sessions at the university housing community center.

Multiple U.S. universities offered emotional help for distraught students following the 2024 election, including the University of Oregon which provided time with a therapy duck while sipping hot apple cider; Virginia Tech offered therapy dogs and guided stretching; and some professors at Harvard canceled classes on Wednesday and extended course work deadlines.

Apparently, many people do not have any appreciation that suicide among young people has reached epidemic proportions. We have created an environment that facilitates death and destruction and uncaring attitude to those who suffer. We are killing ourselves. Save the children save the world. One world one family.

While you assert we need more young people receiving mental health services, I disagree. The United States has the highest number of people in counseling. Our high rate of suicide, I believe is linked to the push that free speech, like using the wrong pronoun, can lead to suicide. Teaching people to be strong, tolerant and secure in themselves should be the goal. Instead, it is if something does not go your way, you need counseling.

It’s not lack of using the right pronouns that is driving so many of our children to suicide like never before in history. It’s a lack of love a lack of compassion and a culture that promotes mindless consumerism and over consumption that leaves people feeling spiritually empty, and without the support of their community in times of need. We have a coarse uncaring culture that goes so far as to mock children who are suicidal. It’s the parents not the children that are the problem. Sorry. Love is the only thing we will never run out of. It’s a shame so many people are so stingy with it.

If the election drove these kids over the edge what are they going to do when student loan eligibility is tied to SAT/ACT scores?


Restrict student loans and you drive more youngsters to trade schools, where we need them.

Education, like healthcare, should be made available to everyone who wants or needs it regardless of income. That’s how we make the world a better place.

How is that the “same argument”? Also, Trump’s assassin was a registered republican with far right views, so want to try again? Wait until they find out, the progressives policies they have been indoctrinated to love, is why college costs far too much for the actual education they receive.

What Will America Be in the Future?? This Was An Election NOT a War!! So many Pansy’s in Our Communities BECAUSE of parents letting them sit in the house playing video games all day. They don’t learn any teamwork sportsmanship leadership because they’re not involved in any activities like afterschool sports or even a drama class perhaps. The way we were raised at home there were consequences when you broke the rules and yes, I remember my father hitting me two times and I deserve them both times these days even think they give them what do they do take their phone or maybe their Xbox or any other thing that cost hundreds of dollars away from them for one day?


The problem is kids today need structure, discipline, chores, things that make them understand. Nothing comes for free and you have to be part of the family unit and help out..


The fact that Cal poly closed sunglasses and brought in psychiatrist and psychologist because of the election good God good thing they weren’t born around 911 or were they?


It’s time to put God back in schools, get children involved in afterschool activities rather than sitting around sedentary playing video games that will eventually have an effect on their eyes. He’s whiny crybaby asses are not gonna be able to support us in a war or any type of futuristic thing that may happen..


Fuck up people teach him wrong teach him how to work for a days work they want another video game for that $400 system that you paid for have them do it or have them earn it

They took over several college campuses and were very hateful towards Jewish students who spoke out saying they didn’t feel sage on campus. The colleges let this go on for awhile without doing anything.

Hopefully, this article isn’t meant to mock college students who are worried and away from their families and don’t have comfort readily available. What’s the harm in offering them support? This division in our country and the election have been stressful for many.
