Group plans anti-Trump protests across San Luis Obispo County

A group opposed to the Trump administration is planning three protests in San Luis Obispo County on Saturday.

The group’s coordinated events across SLO County are expected to draw 4,000 to
5,000 participants to declare that in America we don’t put up with would-be kings, according to a press release. The “No Kings” protests are planned in more than 1,800 cities.

“What we’re witnessing is an unprecedented federal override of state authority and the militarization of domestic law enforcement,” said Linda Baker, SLO County coordinator for the ‘No Kings’ mobilization. “Recent events in Los Angeles have raised serious concerns about federal authority and the appropriate use of military resources. The deployment of military forces is an unnecessary abuse of power intended to chill dissent against attacks on our rights, our families, and our communities.”

Tom Fulks, chair of the San Luis Obispo County Democratic Party and former columnist for the SLO Tribune, said these local rallies on Flag Day are intended to draw attention to this American president’s war on California and other “blue” states.

“For the first time in history, an American president has declared military aggression against a particular American state, sending armed combat Marines into the heart of the resistance against domestic fascism,” Fulks said. “This salvo against California is the first of what we should expect to be against nearly every ‘blue’ donor state that opposes Trump’s fascism yet pays the most in taxes to underwrite the ‘red states that support him
– and the end of American democracy.”

  • San Luis Obispo: 10:30 a.m. to noon from the Courthouse steps to Mission Plaza
  • Atascadero: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the intersection of El Camino Real and Morro Road
  • Cambria: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the intersection of Cambria Drive and Main Street

Only one thing discourages authoritarians from stealing nations from the PEOPLE and that is the PEOPLE – in numbers – SOLIDARITY. It’s as simple as opening a history book.

I get the distinct impression that most of the comments that applaud what is happening in this country to immigrants and even some citizens with brown skin is just fine or even “constitutional” have never ever read the Constitution. Or taken a Civics class, for that matter. Unless they completely flunked out, they should know that what is happening is totally against our Constitutional law. Without the Rule of Law, we have no self-rule. Without due process, of everyone, regardless of status, we have no democracy and no way to prove innocence, guilt or status.


Were actual criminals being shopped out, that would be cause for celebration. It is totally obvious that is not what is happening. People who have worked and lived in our communities, contributing to our 4th largest economy in the world are being terrorized, brutalized and shipped away indiscriminately. A judge wasted no time explaining just how UNCONSTITTIONAL that is.


Every time I see one of those posts or hear someone bloviating about how righteous they think this brutality towards the people who have fed and served us looks to them, I am saddened that our educational system has failed so many and put our democracy at such risk. Those of you will pay in the grocery store and just about everywhere else for this, but then, so will the rest of us. Congratulations.

No matter how you look at it, Trump is doing this wrong and it is harming our nation, our communities and our future in terrible ways that will become even more apparent as the months go on. America and Americans of all political leanings willsuffer because of Trump and the attitudes that have supported him.

How must he arrest a criminal alien, the “right” way?


Poll after poll, even those from the left, show Americans agree with Trump, in the way he is handling violent criminal aliens.

Praying for all California residents whether they are legal or not.These people that being targeted are hard workers,doing a lot of jobs that no one else will do.l’m not a huge fan of the Governor but I’m glad is standing up to Trump.

It is admirable that our president is in favor of equally enforcing the law against demonstrators and violent marchers. Unless, of course it is insurrectionists trashing our Capitol building in Washington and assaulting police officers while trying to prevent a free and fair election. Trump pardoned all of them – even the ones who assaulted and caused great bodily injury to the brave police officers protecting people in the Capitol from the violent mob

I support our military, and respect anyone who decides to protect our State and Country. Send more troops!

The US’s civil military relationship is so outstanding because there is such a strong taboo against deploying troops on American soil.


Last time troops were called in was 1992 when it was bipartisan and universally agreed that their help was needed (the current protests are miniscule in comparison); the last time the guard was called against the states wishes was in the 1960s to protect civil rights marches from George Wallace. If you really respect the troops, you’d agree that what makes them so respected is that they don’t act as a tool of domestic politics.


We can at least agree that it’s a bad precedent to use them as anything but a last resort. We don’t want these kinds of shows to become common – imagine President Newsom deploying Marines to Tallahassee to qwell pro-choice marches – your trust might be shaken.


I support our military and troops, so much so that I oppose using them against Americans in a way which erodes their neutrality.

Democratic Governor George Wallace was a presidential hopeful that denounced the civil rights movement by rejecting federal enforcement of the law. At the time it was known to be grandstanding to draw attention to himself for a unsecessful run at the presidency.

Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is a presidential hopeful denouncing the America first movement by rejecting federal enforcement of immigration law and the constitution. This is known as grandstanding to draw attention to himself for an unsuccessful run at the presidency.

Newsom is as out of touch as Wallace was. History repeats its self.

I take your point, it’s true that Newsom loves the media fame from this almost as much as Trump. But it’s disingenuous, possibly lying, to say that Newsom is actively encouraging violence at these protests, listen to any of his statements – he condems rioting AND federal overreach. What started as small anti-ICE protests have become much larger since the President got involved, Trump is fanning the flames – this would have been over by now otherwise.

The marines were deployed to protect Federal buildings like the Ronald Regan Federal building which houses the Marine Corps Officer Selection Service, US Attorneys office, and US Marshals office which was directly across the street from Sasscer Park where the protestors were. The marines were not sent in to walk shoulder to shoulder with the local police arresting people. They are protecting taxpayer funded buildings and employees.

I agree that we should indeed protect federal buildings, but my whole point is that is a job that can be done by the local police, or allied police agencies who haven’t been called in, or the National Guard, or sworn officers with DHS or the FBI or any other civilian federal law enforcement branch. In all of 2020 during the massive protests and stupid riots the active military was never called in, during this comparatively tiny protest he’s breaking 60 years of precedent. Why? To improve security, or to provoke?


It’s an unnecessary escalation, stupid at best, intentionally inflammatory at worst.

California does not allow local police or Sheriff to assist ICE. Meaning, your statement is wrong.


The 2020 riots for the blessed Saint of George, had at least 96,000 Guard troops deployed across the country in response.
