Kamala Harris says she will not run for California governor in 2026

After months of contemplating a run for Gov. Gavin Newsom’s seat, former Vice President Kamala Harris announced Tuesday she will not run for California governor in 2026.

Harris plans to announce, in the next few months, her future plans. She has not ruled out a run for president in 2028.

Kamala Harris’ announcement

“Over the past six months, I have spent time reflecting on this moment in our nation’s history, and the best way for me to continue fighting for the American people and advancing the values and ideals I hold dear.

“I am a devout public servant, and from the earliest days of my career, I have believed that the best way I could make a difference in people’s lives and fight for a better future was to improve the system from within. And it has been a profound honor to do that work and serve the people of California and our nation—as a prosecutor, attorney general, U.S. senator, and vice president.

“In recent months, I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their Governor. I love this state, its people, and its promise. It is my home. But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election.

“I have extraordinary admiration and respect for those who dedicate their lives to public service—service to their communities and to our nation. At the same time, we must recognize that our politics, our government, and our institutions have too often failed the American people, culminating in this moment of crisis.

“As we look ahead, we must be willing to pursue change through new methods and fresh thinking—committed to our same values and principles, but not bound by the same playbook.

“For now, my leadership—and public service—will not be in elected office. I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the nation who will fight fearlessly, and sharing more details in the months ahead about my own plans.

“In the United States of America, power must lie with the people. And we, the people must use our power to fight for freedom, opportunity, fairness, and the dignity of all. I will remain in that fight.”

Sorry I’m late, but let’s just call it: Kamala Harris not running for governor is the best decision she’s made in years—and it probably wasn’t even hers.

California’s falling apart—people can’t afford to live here, crime’s up, the middle class is fleeing—and Kamala was actually considering jumping in like some kind of savior? Please. This is the same politician who built a career mastering the art of showing up, saying nothing, and leaving before the hard work starts.

She says she “reflected deeply”? More like someone finally told her the state doesn’t need another performative figurehead checking boxes for a future presidential run. California’s in crisis. We need serious leadership, not someone whose biggest talent is vanishing when things get complicated.

So yeah—her sitting this one out isn’t just a relief. It’s a damn public service.

Violent crime is down by 6% in California and has persistently fallen for many years now. In fact, Californians in 2024 are experiencing less than a third of the crimes per resident reported in 1980 and just two-thirds as many as they experienced in 2006. But, no matter how much disinformation you spread, Democrats will continue to control this state until the Republicans come back to earth and abandon the MAGA nonsense.

Sure, violent crime is officially down 6%—but only if you ignore the part where Oakland overcounted assaults by 138%, LA and San Diego barely turned in their homework, and the state said ‘close enough’ and published it anyway. It’s like claiming you lost weight because you stopped stepping on the scale. Before we hang a ‘Mission Accomplished’ banner, maybe we should make sure we’re actually counting the crimes first.

Good. She’s a doofus. Go away.

Ah yes, reminds me of a Ben diagram…

I could count in the hundreds the word salads that have come out of Trump’s mouth, so your critique falls flat. Sorry, but thanks for playing.

No one else could use so many words to say so little.

Too bad, I believe she was the best chance of getting a Republican Governor.

You’re absolutely right!!!

She would have guaranteed a sure win for any republican running against her here in CA. I’m truly bummed she’s not running for governor of CA.
