Driver takes out five power poles in Atascadero

October 27, 2025

By KAREN VELIE

Update: The driver struck an overhead wire that resulted in nine poles breaking. These were communication lines, so no power outages.

Original: A driver transporting one half of a modular home snapped nine power poles in Atascadero on Monday morning leaving power lines on roadway.

Shortly before 9:30 a.m., the driver of the oversize load was headed northbound on El Camino Real when the power poles started snapping. The driver pulled over and contacted law enforcement.

Officers have closed northbound El Camino Real between Miner’s Ace Hardware and Food 4 Less.

At this time, PG&E’s website is not showing a power outage.

How does this happen ?

Never understood why burying power and commo lines isn’t normal. Granted, a little harder to find a break, but the odds of a break become minimal at most. Burying also nearly 100% eliminates lightning strikes on poles and transformers. Who doesn’t like the power to stay on during a storm?

How many dead forests are lining our roads and highways across the USA? The most wonderful aspect, is the ugly web of wires simply disappear!
