Taking a firearm to a protest is not empowerment, its reckless

OPINION by ERIK GORHAM

In recent weeks, the conversation around protests and immigration enforcement has taken a sharp turn. Some voices on the left are no longer just criticizing ICE or calling for policy changes. They are now openly asking why “Second Amendment people” aren’t showing up at protests and, by implication, why they aren’t armed.

That framing turns a constitutional right into a political challenge and ignores how these situations actually play out in the real world.

I believe in the Second Amendment, and I will defend it without hesitation. The right to keep and bear arms isn’t a slogan you pull out when it’s convenient. It’s a serious constitutional protection that comes with responsibility and judgment.

Having the right doesn’t mean you should use it in every situation. Defending that right doesn’t mean pretending every use of it makes sense or leads to a good outcome.

This debate came into focus on recent episodes of the Dave Congalton Show.

Tribune editor Joe Terica pointed to San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow and framed Dow’s view that people should not bring guns to protests as the flip side of the Second Amendment, questioning how someone can support the right to bear arms while also urging restraint in that setting.

The night before, when I was a guest on the show, a caller argued that protesters needed firearms to defend themselves against law enforcement. Both arguments rest on the same faulty assumption, that adding guns to an already tense situation somehow makes everyone safer.

A militia is not the same thing as a few armed people acting on good intentions and poor judgment.

The Second Amendment’s reference to a militia was about structure, discipline, and accountability, not emotion or spur-of-the-moment decisions. It was never meant to describe loosely organized individuals bringing weapons into heated protests because someone suggested it on the radio or online.

Confusing those two ideas isn’t faithful to the Constitution. It’s a misunderstanding of history.

We’ve already seen how easily this kind of thinking can go wrong. The Kyle Rittenhouse case is often reduced to political talking points instead of honest judgment, but stripped of slogans, it’s a reminder of how quickly armed chaos can turn deadly. Regardless of legal outcomes, choosing to step into a volatile protest while armed was a decision that could have ended far worse than it did. It came down to seconds and luck. That’s not something we should want to normalize.

The rhetoric escalated further when Tom Fulks, the local Democratic Party chair, appeared on the Dave Congalton Show a few weeks ago and asked, “Where are the Second Amendment people?”

The message wasn’t hard to read. If you support the right to bear arms, you should be willing to confront federal law enforcement with those arms. That may sound bold from a microphone, but it ignores how fast confusion and fear take over when real people are involved.

Encouraging people to bring guns to protests isn’t empowerment. It’s reckless advice from people who won’t be there when shots are fired and won’t be around for the legal bills or the funerals. I can all but guarantee that Tom Fulks will not help buy your casket.

This isn’t a defense of unchecked government power, nor is it a claim that law enforcement never gets it wrong. Those questions deserve serious debate. At the same time, I don’t support the lack of common sense coming from either side. Turning protests into armed standoffs isn’t courage, and brushing off the risks as theoretical isn’t principled.

There’s also deep irony here.

For years, we were told that the presence of police and firearms leads to danger and escalation. Now, some of the same voices are asking why civilians aren’t bringing more guns into confrontations with those same police.

That isn’t consistency. It’s political convenience presented as a moral principle.

Supporting the Second Amendment doesn’t mean encouraging people to put themselves in the worst possible situations. Common sense doesn’t weaken constitutional rights. It recognizes reality, human behavior under stress, and the fact that once a gun enters a heated protest, consequences follow quickly and permanently.

You have the right to bear arms, and that right should be protected. You also have a responsibility to understand that exercising it can dramatically increase the chance you won’t come home, depending on the situation.

The Constitution protects liberty, but it doesn’t cancel consequences or common sense.

How about less opinion pieces and more facts.

He was legally carrying and never had pulled his weapon. ICE found the weapon in the small of his back (holstered) proceeded to remove it from the holster and then proceeded to shoot him 10 times. Ice, while carrying the gun, proceeded to accidentally discharge the gun while carrying it after shooting him.

This is what happens when your hiring and training standards are so low that morons are hired who shouldn’t be allowed guns. Let alone carrying them.

First let me correct you!!! The ICE officer that removed the gun from Alex Pretti’s back accidentally caused the gun to discharge prior to ICE Officers shooting him, FACT! This caused officers to immediately respond to what they though was a deadly threat and hit him with 10 plus rounds. If he didn’t have his gun on him he’d be alive today!!!

He had a right to carry his weapon which I completely agree. With ICE already using deadly force on Renee “Not-so Good”, it was a very poor decision to bring his firearm downtown with him while protesting AND ENGAGING LAW ENFORCEMENT THAT WAS CONDUCTING A LEAFUL OPERATION. Very poor choice on his part and IT COST HIM HIS LIFE, plain and simple!!!!

Ok. So the incompetence of the ice agent caused him to be killed?

The poor decision is to have untrained unqualified goons attempting to deal with the public. Fortunately for them they have keyboard warriors sticking up for their inept ways. Strong work

As to the morons who opened our borders, we suppose.

Any low IQ human might think its a good idea to bring a gun to an intense protest during a federal immigration law enforcement operation. Those with common sense would tell you you are risking your life or well being doing so. And if officers shot and killed someone the week before in the midst of these protest, those same common sense people would tell you “YOU ARE STUPID TO BRING A GUN DOWN TO THESE PROTEST”!!!

Take note Americans…you have the right to protest PEACEFULLY, but stay peaceful and don’t hurt federal officers, threaten ,federal officers obstruct federal officers, impede federal officers, vandalize, or interfere with other’s religious practices, and definitely don’t bring your gun to these protest!!!!. YOU MIGHT END UP FIGHTING A CRIMINAL CASE OR WORSE END UP DEAD!!!!

ICE disarmed a man then executed him, which is literally what every Republican

politician has been saying for years- “That Democrats will do this to gun advocate Americans if they get too much power.”

Turns out they were spouting their own plan all along

I have never heard one republican politician say that. Please give names of the republican politicians that said this, I would like to know who they are…wait….you say ever republican politician has been saying this for years.

C’mon, you need to take a break from whatever is you’re on!!!! It’s got you all effed up!!!!!

Conceal Carry best practices:

  • Duty to Inform: While not explicitly required by state law in all scenarios, many local agencies require permit holders to inform law enforcement of their concealed weapon immediately upon contact.

Pretty sure Alex Preti didn’t brandish his weapon. Pretty sure he was murdered by those who did. While face down in the street. While being beaten, then disarmed of a gun he never pulled, while trying to help a woman who had been violently assaulted for exercising her rights.

Kind of like Ashley Babbit….

You’re pretty sure? Were you there or are you believing what you are being told? I believe that in the scuffle, a gun was discovered on Alex Preti and may have accidentally discharged being a  SIG Sauer P320 9mm pistol that has had a history of accidental discharges. When the ICE officers heard a gun and then a shot they may have thought the suspect was firing at them.

I am curious and have not read anywhere, did Alex Pretti normally have his gun on his person or was it unusual for him to carry his gun? The end result doesn’t change but folks make it sound like it had his gun so he could use it had the protest. In my eyes, what ICE did, there is no justification.

He was a nurse, I am pretty sure the hospital he worked at did not allow him to bring his gun to work.

Whether he regularly carried or not, he should have never brought his gun down to these intense minneapolis protests. Especially after Renee “Not-so-Good” got killed by ICE the week before for driving her vehicle towards an ICE officer.

Alex Pretti did not have the common sense to understand that federal officers were willing to use deadly force, JUSTIFIED OR UNJUSTIFIED, on persons obstructing, impeding, or threatening these federal officers if the federal officers felt like there was a possible deadly threat. Whether it was a justified shooting on the federal officers part or not, that answer doesn’t bring him back to his family. If he didn’t bring his gun downtown to the protests that day, HE’D STILL BE ALIVE TODAY!!!!

Take note Americans…you have the right to protest PEACEFULLY, but stay peaceful and don’t hurt, threaten, obstruct, impede, vandalize, or interfere with other’s religious practices, and definitely don’tbring your gun to these protest!!!!. YOU MIGHT END UP FIGHTING A CRIMINAL CASE OR WORSE END UP DEAD!!!!

The people encouraging firearms be brought to protest to use against law enforcement also don’t care if someone dies as long as it paints the political narrative their aiming for. They want people divided, they want the chaos, they don’t want people united and working together. There’s so many things humans have in common that could bring communities together but the politicians and loudest voices don’t want that. I’ll never understand why people put so much trust into one political party and politicians.

I am a defender of the second amendment.

Second amendment enthusiasts will always twist and turn their view point to promote whatever bullshit they are throwing out there.

Grow up. Be accountable. They can lie to each other but when their line of BS hits the masses it shows how hypocritical they are.

One of the reasons why Republicans are going to get wiped out is because they are tone deaf how bad their lying sounds to the masses. They can keep beating the drum of lies and bullshit. It just adds fuel to the fire of the midterms. Democrats must love it.

Pretty sure all the ICE agents are bringing firearms to the protests.

Pretty sure two wrongs don’t make a right

Sure. And I’m not implying that. The vast majority of these ICE agents are untrained and unqualified to be carrying firearms. They’re scared in the face of opposition and don’t know how keep their cool when shit starts to hit the fan. And, as a result of them not being fit for the job, we have two American citizens shot and killed by fellow Americans. It’s a mess.

How do you know what their training is?

You mean they are armed to arrest violent criminals and p*dos and protect themselves from their unstable protectors

Yes they are because they are on duty law enforcement. Just like a carpenter brings a hammer to work-a firearm us a law enforcement tool!!!!

Alex Pretti should have never brought his firearm down to the protests in Minneapolis, whether he regularly carried or not PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!!!
