Taking a firearm to a protest is not empowerment, its reckless

OPINION by ERIK GORHAM

In recent weeks, the conversation around protests and immigration enforcement has taken a sharp turn. Some voices on the left are no longer just criticizing ICE or calling for policy changes. They are now openly asking why “Second Amendment people” aren’t showing up at protests and, by implication, why they aren’t armed.

That framing turns a constitutional right into a political challenge and ignores how these situations actually play out in the real world.

I believe in the Second Amendment, and I will defend it without hesitation. The right to keep and bear arms isn’t a slogan you pull out when it’s convenient. It’s a serious constitutional protection that comes with responsibility and judgment.

Having the right doesn’t mean you should use it in every situation. Defending that right doesn’t mean pretending every use of it makes sense or leads to a good outcome.

This debate came into focus on recent episodes of the Dave Congalton Show.

Tribune editor Joe Terica pointed to San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow and framed Dow’s view that people should not bring guns to protests as the flip side of the Second Amendment, questioning how someone can support the right to bear arms while also urging restraint in that setting.

The night before, when I was a guest on the show, a caller argued that protesters needed firearms to defend themselves against law enforcement. Both arguments rest on the same faulty assumption, that adding guns to an already tense situation somehow makes everyone safer.

A militia is not the same thing as a few armed people acting on good intentions and poor judgment.

The Second Amendment’s reference to a militia was about structure, discipline, and accountability, not emotion or spur-of-the-moment decisions. It was never meant to describe loosely organized individuals bringing weapons into heated protests because someone suggested it on the radio or online.

Confusing those two ideas isn’t faithful to the Constitution. It’s a misunderstanding of history.

We’ve already seen how easily this kind of thinking can go wrong. The Kyle Rittenhouse case is often reduced to political talking points instead of honest judgment, but stripped of slogans, it’s a reminder of how quickly armed chaos can turn deadly. Regardless of legal outcomes, choosing to step into a volatile protest while armed was a decision that could have ended far worse than it did. It came down to seconds and luck. That’s not something we should want to normalize.

The rhetoric escalated further when Tom Fulks, the local Democratic Party chair, appeared on the Dave Congalton Show a few weeks ago and asked, “Where are the Second Amendment people?”

The message wasn’t hard to read. If you support the right to bear arms, you should be willing to confront federal law enforcement with those arms. That may sound bold from a microphone, but it ignores how fast confusion and fear take over when real people are involved.

Encouraging people to bring guns to protests isn’t empowerment. It’s reckless advice from people who won’t be there when shots are fired and won’t be around for the legal bills or the funerals. I can all but guarantee that Tom Fulks will not help buy your casket.

This isn’t a defense of unchecked government power, nor is it a claim that law enforcement never gets it wrong. Those questions deserve serious debate. At the same time, I don’t support the lack of common sense coming from either side. Turning protests into armed standoffs isn’t courage, and brushing off the risks as theoretical isn’t principled.

There’s also deep irony here.

For years, we were told that the presence of police and firearms leads to danger and escalation. Now, some of the same voices are asking why civilians aren’t bringing more guns into confrontations with those same police.

That isn’t consistency. It’s political convenience presented as a moral principle.

Supporting the Second Amendment doesn’t mean encouraging people to put themselves in the worst possible situations. Common sense doesn’t weaken constitutional rights. It recognizes reality, human behavior under stress, and the fact that once a gun enters a heated protest, consequences follow quickly and permanently.

You have the right to bear arms, and that right should be protected. You also have a responsibility to understand that exercising it can dramatically increase the chance you won’t come home, depending on the situation.

The Constitution protects liberty, but it doesn’t cancel consequences or common sense.

A bottle of nitroglycerin next to the “we disagree party” punch bowl.

The horrible thing is, if they would have just arrested him the week before when he attacked the vehicle and put hands on agents, he’d be alive.

And no the second amendment isn’t about organized groups, it’s about the ability to organize if need and already be prepared. Most of the people arguing in this thread don’t understand how illegal all this stuff is in ca..

Let’s just skip trying to figure out what a man or woman is and give me a definition of “peaceful”

While I know ad hominem attacks are bad form, I keep it simple. If Tom Fulks is for something, I’m against it. How he has escaped the FBI for so long is amazing. How one person can be wrong on so many things is remarkable.

Where all the 2A lovers at? They certainly showed up for J6 and the BLM protests.

2A lovers are responsible gun owners and would not bring a gun to this type of protest. As for J6 protest, the only person shot was killed by a cop. I have not heard of a gun being discharged by a civilian.

Don’t tread on me! Masked, armed, lawless, government officials killing and detaining innocent citizens, and suspected individuals to undisclosed facilities without due process does not deserve your benefit of the doubt.

Writing, such a contorted, and contrived, defense of the indefensible says a great deal about the “right’s’ dissonance when it comes to confronting the mess they’ve created.

We would have agreed to temporary work visas and a path to permanent residency long ago. Your fever dream of an over zealous ICE police state will reap benefits to the Democratic Party for years to come.

And yes, violent oppression by our government will result in citizens bringing arms to a civil protest.. That is our right to do so.

Less than 100th of 1% are innocent citizens detained by ICE, you and I both know this is true or your CNN and MSDNC would be plastering it all over the television. 605,000 deportations by ICE operations and not even the legacy fake news media can provide more than 15 or 20 cases.

Yan, you say “Masked, armed, lawless, government officials killing and detaining innocent citizens”. Please give us all here on CCN 16 other cases beside Alex Pretti and Renee Not-so-Good. C’mon, I challenge you!!!! If you are not very good at math that’s 1/500th of 1% of all the deportations from 2025 my friend!!!! Good luck sweetheart, you’re going to need it!!!!

ICE and Border Patrol ARE undertrained. They are NOT trained to handle riot and crowd control. So, why were they engaging in this activity? Because Minn. and Minneapolis have declared themselves as sanctuary areas. Thus, local police were ordered to stand down and not assist the federal agents. The two deaths could have been prevented if: the local police had been allowed to assist the Feds; and/or the Feds were allowed to simply go into Minn. jails and make their arrests of CRIMINAL illegal aliens. Anyone who disagrees that the deaths are on the hands of the mayor of Minneapolis and governor of Minnesota are either blindly loyal to “their” side or simply misinformed.

Remember the two categories we’re focused on. First are illegal aliens who have committed violent crimes (including DUIs), and illegal aliens who have not committed violent crimes. (If the phrase “illegal aliens” offends you, I’m sorry…it is taken from the govt. code.) Personally, I have no issue with the latter. Keep in mind that if a violent subject is encouraged and happens to be in the presence of the latter, the latter will unfortunately be detained. The officers/agents have no choice. Look at it this way. If you’re riding as a passenger in a vehicle and the driver gets detained for a DUI, the police will probably look into your status. If you have a warrant, sorry, you’re going to jail. The police can’t simply ignore the fact you have a warrant.

Simple solution. If you are here illegally: (a) don’t draw attention to yourself (b) don’t break the law (c) don’t associate with those who do. Keep a low profile, take care of your immigration status, and chances are you’ll be fine. Finally, don’t listen to liberal activists who are USING you for their own political agenda. They don’t have YOUR best interest in mind and aren’t worthy of your trust.

I agree with you 100%.

You’re right, and “Violent Crime” should be shortened to “Crime”. Petty theft or vandalism may not be violent but it should get you sent home.

Totally agree with with previous comments. He had a TOTAL RIGHT to carry his gun. That is what Concealed Carry is all about, as long as you abide by the rules and reguations for that license. He would not have been in that position if ICE were not there — they bear the full responsibility and accountability for his murder — while his gun was holstered, not making any movement to get his gun. So, per your warped view, I guess nobody should be able to get concealed carry licenses because you NEVER KNOW when ICE will show up ANYWHERE at ANY TIME! In reality, what ICE wants is for EVERYONE to be cowering in their homes and businesses so it is much easier for ICE to force their way in and kidnap and/or kill anyone they want, whenever they want, per Mr. Bonehead’s direction and approval. Take your screwed up view and leave this country, along with the entire Executive Administration and most Republicans in Congress, as TRUE Americans believe in totally lawful operations, following and supporting our Constitution, Bill of Rights and laws. You disgust me.

Us Republicans aren’t going anywhere truthinscience. Especially right now as we, along with the majority of American citizens, are very happy with the direction our country is heading compared to the downward spiral Biden & Harris had us in.

Us Republicans along with the majority of Americans believe in enforcing the laws on the books, closed borders, deportation of illegal aliens, dismantling sanctuary policies, that there are only two genders male & female, and that only U.S. citizens should be allowed to vote in U.S. elections!!!! All these common sense policies are either in effect or going to be soon!!!! WHY WOULD WE LEAVE, LIFES GOOD MY FRIEND!

We’re ramping up and just getting started!

Blame not the Republican party, blame the Democrats that allowed much of this ILLEGAL INVASION to happen under their elected watch. Both nationally and absolutely in this one party, gerrymandered, election cheating (fact) state.

This duly elected POTUS administration, that won in a landslide, is simply following the Rule of Law that has for too long, been ignored by the DemoNcrats.

Elections have consequences and as I stated, we’re
