Brennler, Luna won’t run again

August 1, 2008

By KAREN VELIE

Atascadero Mayor Mike Brennler won’t seek a second term on the Atascadero City Council because of health concerns.

And council member George Luna said he will also retire from the council

Relatively unknown before his first attempt at public office, Brennler ran for a two-year seat promising to address local corruption. With three seats up for grabs in the 2006 election, he tallied the highest percentage of votes.

“From day one I’ve always known I was in a position, if I was compromising my health or the welfare of my family, I would have to leave the public arena,” Brennler said. “Politics is an ugly business.”

During his tenure, Luna voted to make development pay for itself and for downtown redevelopment. He approved the Atascadero Road Plan, and was involved in balancing the city’s budget and avoiding municipal layoffs in the early 1990s. Luna has been a majority favorite during the past decade.

How might these changes affect Atascadero? Let’s recap the past few years:

April 2006: The Rottman Group announced plans to build a super Wal-Mart at the corner of El Camino Real and Del Rio Road;

May 2006: City officials denied prior knowledge of negotiations with the box-store giant;

June 2006: Opponents and proponents of Wal-Mart began a battle that still rages today;

July 2006: E-mails leaked to the media reveal city officials and staffs were negotiating with the retail giant in 2005;

November 2006: Newcomers Brennler and Ellen Beraud, along with incumbent Tom O’Malley, won seats on the council. Advocating transparency in government and reform, Brennler and Beraud immediately encountered a volatile opposition;

January 2007: Prompted by Brennler and Beraud, the council voted to televise council meetings. In prior years, Luna’s motions to televise gatherings were always unsuccessful;

June 2007: Brennler asked law enforcement to investigate whether developer Kelly Gearhart committed fraud in not paying development fees. Gearhart is currently a defendant in a lawsuit alleging he bilked investors out of money;

February 2008: City Attorney Brian Pierik informed Brennler the FBI is investigating the city. The ongoing FBI investigation is said by sources to be focusing on possible under-the-table payoffs to, or overly-cozy relationships between, upper level city management. The probe reportedly includes both elected and non-elected officials and some private individuals;

May 2008: At a “public trust and campaign reform” workshop, O’Malley challenged Brennler to handle a dispute regarding council procedures “out in the parking lot.” Council members and a few citizens engaged in frequent heated disputes ranging from arguments about Wal-Mart, to battles over council decorum.

Three seats will be open in the November election.

Atascadero needs CC Candidates says: says:

WE need people who are willing and have the time to throw a hat into the ring. Atascadero needs you to promote our marxist views of the world. We have very few left leaning marxists choices for the up coming City Council election. We also need an all new council except for our newest and most devoted member Ellen "the turtle" Beraud. Jerry Clay has served a long and distinquished time and it's time for him to become the elected mayer. He has strong emotions, driven opinions and always acts in the best interest of Atascadero. Not good for us. Roberta Fonzi will be running but the problem is that Al Fonzi is far too suportive of his wife and his suport is interpreted as speaking for Roberta. We can't have that. The guy turns me on is on fire and a fire fighter to boot who wants a WM so that he and his buddies can continue to raise awareness of public safety. They already announced (more than once) that they want a greater level of public service for the community and that WM sales tax will achieve that goal. This is admirable considering the pay scale and benefits they receive are less than other comunities in the area and the fact that they live here in this beautiful city and already volunteer more comunity suport than the average citizen in Atascadero. Goody, Goodies. Then there is this new guy from New York City, Len who is an attorney, that’s three potential positives – new in town (fresh outlook)-from NY City and an attorney. He is also assuming to think he could understand our situation. He has done his homework and isn't too arrogant to realize that he doesn't know what he thinks he knows. Bob Kelley might run for election and he is reasonable and objective. If Grigger tries to run again , well were just waiting to open the closet. The guy doesn't have a chance in hell. Who will save us? Who? Please stand up? You are out there. It will take courage but if your honest (about stopping that damn WalMart ,sincere (about taking your niehbors property, particularly along the Creek and capable of subverting the system you will get the endorsements that you need to win. Many will rally behind you. Ya Volt! You will win with us.

We don't need no big picture.

Here's what we need.

1) Operate on a balanced budget. Stop deficit spending now!

2) Expedite the WalMart and related projects.

3) Plan to spend Tax increment gains from the WalMart and related projects in downtown. Possibly a parking garage behind the Carlton.

4) Do a true analysis of the rotunda to determine the true feasibility of the project and do not continue to throw money at it without an accurate analysis. Do not use existing consultants for this survey. This would have been a far better use of funds than the economic study. We probably could have used some of that 4 mil. plus we just threw at the Architects for this.

5) Figure out what exactly is going on with the printery. If Kelly Gearhart owns it make him perform or take it back if possible. We need to come to grips with this. If we pulled a fast one its time to correct our direction.

6) Support development by some kind of moratorium on development fees to some level to encourage development on a short term basis to try to fire up the local economy. Say 50% fees for a year or so. This might help the Colony Park project.

We don't need a big picture just a small clear picture.

GEEZ INSIDER, JUST GILD O'MALLEY AND CLAY IN GOLD AND CALL IT ALL GOOD. GACK!! I THINK I JUST HACKED UP A HAIRBALL ON THAT.

By: Anonymous on 8/7/08

I have to disagree with you about Atascadero needing a "big picture" guy.

An old saying goes “the farther from the problem the more philosophical the answer”. Mr. Colamarino is obviously a very long way from the problems in Atascadero with his grand visions for our city. Atascadero is not like a Manhattan boardroom. In the Manhattan boardrooms they can dream up their “visions” and philosophical answers; the difference is the individuals in the Manhattan boardrooms also have hundreds of millions of dollars to make their “big picture” happen. We need candidates with their feet on the ground not their head in the clouds.

By: Anonymous on 8/7/08

Apparently you do not understand what a General plan is. It is General and subject to change. Thats why they have a process for general plan amendments. If not it would be called a set in concrete plan and there would be no process to change it.

By: Anonymous on 8/7/08

So now your saying Clay and O'Malley can take credit for the WalMart deal. I am OK with that and thank them for it. So is that right Clay and O'Malley get credit. And Jim Lewis too. Thanks to Jim is in order to for suggesting the rezone. It's nice to see someone doing whats in the best interest of the City.

By: Anonymous on 8/7/08

That's right! They are on record as being in favor of ANY Walmart and don't support the General Plan they both voted for in 2002-2003. That flip-flop is no worse than their flip-flop on the creek setback issue in 2006-2007.

By: Anonymous on 8/7/08

Lewis was the one that told the Rottman group to make it 'bigger' and not to worry about the rezoning issue as the Council (O'Malley, Clay, and Scalise) would approve it.

Rottman Group contributed heavily to O'Malley and Clay's re-election campaigns and held big money fund-raisers for them. There's no doubt that the conversations turned to Wal-Mart as that is the only business that Rottman has been dealing with for the last four years.

All their talk of 'never having spoke with Wal-Mart' is all double-speak.

Hiring a hitman doesn't get you out of a murder charge.

By: Anonymous on 8/7/08

to insider not and insider

Boy you guys can't make up your minds. First you spend months claiming O'Malley and Clay are responsible for bringing in WalMart. Then I accept that and give them credit for it and you say oh no they didn't have anything to do with it. Make up your minds or is that even possible. Lets just say they stand in full support of WalMart and don't waffle about it.

By: Anonymous on 8/7/08

I must admit that I was very disappointed with Bob Kelly's interview as well. As was previously stated, he avoided answering the questions. It seemed he was pandering to both sides. I'm scratching him off my list of potential candidates. We need leaders that are forthright.

I have to disagree with the poster who said we don't need a "big picture" candidate (Len C.) I think that's exactly what we need in A-town, someone who can see the forest despite the many trees.

By: Anonymous on 8/7/08

O'Malley and Clay had nothing to do with getting Walmart to come to Atrashcadero. If you read the history (on the city's website) you will see it was the community development staff with Jim Lewis that turned down a Rottman group proposal for a grocery store and residential housing for "something bigger". O'Malley had nothing to do with losing Trader Joes, either. He was just the Mayor and sent a letter of support like they all do.

Clay has never done anything except pontificate and vote with his buddy, O'Malley.

By: Anonymous on 8/7/08

TO INSIDER: You should be the last one to lamblast anyone over "thin skin" You tend to attack only one thing and never deal with the problems going on all over our fair city. At least Truthbeknown knows when he has crossed the line with his behavior, which results in being rude and disrespectful. You, on the other hand, must be a very, very unhappy, angry, self-centered person. I hope your children – if you have any- never have to deal with someone like you attacking YOU!

By: Anonymous on 8/7/08

It's time for 'insider' to be unmasked so we can all congratulate him (?) for the eloquent and constructive discourse on how to create a community.

By: Anonymous on 8/7/08

Atascadero is the new Los Osos. Both communities have become nothing more than caricatures, short-sightedly focusing on one issue to the detriment of the community at large.

As for Bob Kelley, after hearing him on KVEC last night, I'd vote for Pedro before I voted for him. The man is nothing more than an ambulatory waffle.

By: Anonymous on 8/7/08

Tom and Jerry apparently got WalMart to invest here. Thank God I don't know how they did it but they did it. What is even more exciting is that no matter how much certain people in the community try and get rid of them, they stay. No matter what any of us want without that stick to it attitude of WalMart we would be up the creek without a paddle. Thats one thing I save the rest for another post.

It is interesting, ABA is a legal PAC, open and transparent, and they get hammered by the vindictive people who have hid behind OWM, AHOA and others. Who do not identify themselves or where the money comes from.

Open and transparent are only words that you spew while your are really saying "Do as I say, not as I do!"

Run and hide while you can because your time is limited.

By: Anonymous on 8/7/08

How dare you complain about the lack of good candidates. We all have you and your ABA friends to thank for that.

By: Anonymous on 8/7/08

You are a real ass. Your diaper has been wet every since Brennler and Ellen were elected and the Good Ole Boy's lost control of the city council. No one listens to you and we all know that you intentionally called Cheryl, Cathy to make it appear that you aren't one of her good friends. Anyone as nasty as Cheryl Burbach is surely on your good buddy list. Mike Brennler is a fantastic, capable person and you know it. That’s why you and your GOB friends got together to create more discord than has ever existed. Just what have Tom and Jerry accomplished? Nothing except to get Atascadero into it's current situation.

By: Anonymous on 8/7/08

A very poor performance by all was had on the Dave Congalton show last night. Bob Kelley waffled on every question. He made some remark that insinuated Brennler was not qualified or prepared for the job of being on the City Council let alone major. As if scripted Brennler was immediately on the phone. Once again confronting anyone that makes a peep about him and attributing several opinions to Bob Kelley he didn't even know he had. absolute Fraud on the FEMA application by city council and staff, and the desire to fire Wade the City Manager. Brennler is an ass and once an ass always an ass. Bob will obviously say whatever will get him elected which didn't work last time. Dave attacked this web sight implying vicious an cruel things were being directed at Brennlers daughter. I disagree I just said keep him. She's and adult not a little girl and she knew where she was posting and the level of debate her father has created. So if her skin is so thim that suggesting he be kept on a short leash offended her I appologise. Dave should have just read the comment if he thought it so offensive. Dave is on the attack with this blog. He has made several comments on air now and on his websight as to the lack of discipline that a good editing could fix. Maybe Dave is getting his talking points from Brennler he seems to be pro Shield, anti WalMart, and very protective of Brennler and family maybe Dan and Karen should do a article on that. There was no discussion on the Citys current out of control budget. There was no discussion on the fact that if we continue with the rotunda building we will either bankrupt the city in the process or have a partially finish building that will end up mothballed in an incomplete state. These are the two most important issues not Bob Kelleys personal fight with the Planning Department, or whether Mike Brennlers little girl is upset that nobody likes her daddy. Lastly in Bobs attempt to somewhat distance himself from the Kelly Gearhart questions he clearly has a close relationship with Kelly but apparently doesn't take meals with him. I can't blame him on that one he might get bit. Have multiple real estate deals with him is having a relationship with him Bob it's called a Business relationship. If you don't get that then you will never understand conflict of interest. By the way if you want to see cruel comments look at the comment made about Cathy Burbach, or Mary White the firemans wife made by Brennler supporters. Brennler has made himself a public figure and needs to resign his seat if he can't take the heat.

By: Anonymous on 8/6/08

Hold on there you are starting to make sense

So what are you doing on this blog?

By: Anonymous on 8/6/08

I listened to Len Colamarino and Bob Kelley today on the radio, and I’m very disappointed in what I heard.

Len Colamarino is a “big picture” (his own words) guy that obviously hasn’t done his homework. Atascadero is not a big corporate board meeting in Manhattan. Mr. Colamarino will be casting votes dealing with FEMA and the Rotunda Building as soon as he steps into office. It would be helpful if he had a clue on dealing with FEMA and what has transpired over the past several years. You have some serious homework to do Mr. Colamarino if you want my vote.

I was expecting more from Bob Kelley…….He sounded like a typical realtor. He didn’t have a straight forward answer about anything.

I was very disappointed that Bob Kelley wouldn’t answer the question about the ASI. I would very much like to hear both of them answer that question.

We need people that will make a decision…..So I’m not impressed with the “big picture” lawyer, or the wheeler dealer realtor.

So lets have an answer guys…….How will you vote on the ASI? Either of the candidates willing to step up and grow a pair?

Here’s a big picture idea……Tell Comar and the ASI to stick it. Give Wal-Mart the original 200,000 sq. ft. they wanted in trade for a new rotunda building……..There you have it, more tax revenue for the city, and a great start on our new cultural town center.

By: Anonymous on 8/6/08

So now that I've listened to "New York Len" on KPRL and Bob Kelly on KVEC, all I can say is – WHO ELSE IS RUNNING! Mr. New York has no clue what the process is when dealing with FEMA, and acting like you can "just ask" to change the use of the building is tragically naive. If he has been here for 3 years, has he taken the time to do any research on the topic at all?? I'm not even close to an Al Fonzi fan, but I have to say his facts were right on. I must admit that as a long time resident my first reaction to this uppity New Yorker was something akin to finger down the throat. . . but then I thought, listen to what he has to say. . . .maybe a new perspective is just what we need. . . . at least I can say is that I tried. . . . Bob would have done better to have actually answered the questions posed to him – how many times can you ask "Are you going to vote for the shield initiative?" It's really simple – Yes – or – No. Multiple choice. . . .

I'll just keep hoping others step up. . .

By: Anonymous on 8/6/08

To Jenny B.- I apologize for my earlier comment to you. It was in poor taste.

By: Anonymous on 8/6/08

Next up: Bob Kelly on KVEC Now!

By: Anonymous on 8/6/08

Listened to Len C. on KPRL this afternoon. After reading his blog, he kind of perked my interest. He seems to be well spoken, thoughtful, and actually has a very positive vision for Atascadero. At one point in the interview, Al Fonzi called in and tried to call Len out. I was impressed with the way Len stood his ground and did not back down to Mr. Fonzi. I was not disapointed in my expectations of Len. I'm interested in hearing more about his thoughts about the issues we have here in Atascadero.

Disclaimer: Before I'm accused, I am no way, shape, or form associated with Mr. Colamarino. I have never met the man.

to Inside an Ass: Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Someone has finally called a spade a spade. I believe Insider just has so much venom inside(r)him that without spewing all the time, he would implode. Poor stupid animal.

By: Anonymous on 8/6/08

Insider – can you be any more of an asshole? Why don't you "man up" and confront Mr. Brennler yourself instead of making lots of stupid insinuations and insults. What specifically has he done that is a "reign of terror not before seen in this town"? You can't even put a sentence together correctly, let alone spell or write.

Why don't you run for Council yourself and see what "civility" you can wrangle up when assholes like yourself spew venom and hatred at every moment you can? You bring nothing constructive to the table with any of your rants and uninformed opinions.

By: Anonymous on 8/6/08

Insider and Truthbeknown: You two are just a gas!!! I'm pretty sure you could be a comedy team and go on Letterman. You really keep this site interesting. Oops, I think I was just blowing smoke – sorry….

By: Anonymous on 8/6/08

Insider: I don't have a crappy little house because luckily I was here loooooong before you probably were here to build and sell the houses (thank heavens). So, I am one of the lucky ones. However, anyone looking now adays has my sympathy.

By: Anonymous on 8/6/08

I think Mike may have stepped over the line when he started directing APD officers to do his dirty work. It makes even Bubans accusations of Brennler directing city staff to harass him potentially credible. The biggest joke is that he suggest his greatest achievment as Mayor is to bring civility back to the meetings. When in fact he unleased a reign of terror not before seen in this town which he presided upon with great pride. Brennler has been seen over and over drectly confronting in an antagonistic way anyone who dares to question him. This site must make his blood boil since he knows many people read it and he can't get to those of us that wish to express our views without being subjected to his cross examination. Brennler should resign at once and save us all another four months of his bully behavior.

By: Anonymous on 8/6/08

I didn't belittle her I just would like to see her dad kept on a short leash.

By: Anonymous on 8/6/08

You're pretty sick f-u-c-you- know-what to hide your identity and belittle a young woman who is merely expressing her love for her father.

Len C. on KPRL, now!

By: Anonymous on 8/6/08

Jenny B says: "As his daughter, I selfishly couldn't be happier that he has chosen not to run again."

Jenny, many of us are happy he has chosen not to run as well, but for a different reason.

By: Anonymous on 8/6/08

To all who supported and continue to support my father, Mike Brennler, I wholeheartedly thank you!

As his daughter, I selfishly couldn't be happier that he has chosen not to run again. I'm excited he'll back to a much more relaxed lifestyle, and my sons are equally excited to get their Opa back. The stress, blame, hurt, and hate that has been placed upon him by certain citizens is akin to cruel and unusual punishment that nobody deserves.

However, as a citizen of Atascadero, I am very disappointed to be losing his honest, respectable, and hardworking leadership for the city. I hope everyone does their homework on our council candidates before November's election.

I'm proud of you dad, as I know may people are!

Ask Kelley if he at all regrets his votes and wholehearted support for Gearhart over the years.

By: Anonymous on 8/5/08

Bob Kelley will be on my show Wednesday night from 6:05 to 7 to discuss Atascadero issues. Tune in and call in Thanks!

By: Anonymous on 8/5/08

Good assessment, Paso native. With an elected mayor, at least we may be able to make a start. Atascadero has a long road ahead of it, but as they say, the journey of a thousand miles starts with one step.

By: Anonymous on 8/5/08

Frank didn't do it alone. It was a usually unanimous council standing together representing an acquiescing electorate. You don't have that in Atascadero. A ceremonial mayor with no more power than any other councilmember will not heal the division. As long as Atascadero has the kind of hatred that the contributors of this blog have, there will be a bleak future for Atascadero — Wal Mart or not.

Sorry can't do that they already have that I just forgot it it's called an in lieu fee for inclusionary housing. So I guess there is only 72,000 to build that crappy little house for anonymous

Good post! I concur! Any organization, whether it be private or public, profit or non-profit, needs strong leadership at the helm. Just look at what Mayor Mecham has done during his tenure in Paso. An elected mayor could start to bring that leadership to Atascadero.

And before you ask, I don't have any particular person in mind. I'd be happy with whomever steps up and shows they can do the job, will be fair, and listens to all the citizenry.

By: Anonymous on 8/5/08

Another great idea would be to add another new fee of 10,000 per house on the next 5,000 new homes and then we would have our 50,000,000 for our Rotunda Building. That should bring them to town.

By: Anonymous on 8/5/08

I am not Mike Jackson or any of the usual suspects. I do know however why that crappy house you live in is $600,000. Lets start with $250,000 for the land and then 30,000 for the permit then 16,000 for the water meter. Throw in another 10,000 for other utilities,gas, phone ,cable, electric all underground. another 30,000 for frontage improvements and lets say 20,000 for grading and tree protection and replacement. Where are we at $356,000. Add to that the 7% for realtor and closing $42,000,

$20,000 for Architect, Structural Engineer, Soils Engineer, Arborists, Geologist, Civil Engineer and who every that new Creek Guru they wanted. $50,000 Carry costs. Now thats $468,000. Assuming the contractor makes $50,000 himself for all that misery that leaves $82,000 to build your crappy little house. And you wonder why you have a crappy little house?

By: Anonymous on 8/5/08

I don't have a name and I don't have an agenda. I just feel that rotating the mayor's position amoung each city council member is a joke. We need to elect a mayor on that person's vision for the city. Maybe then we would have a consistent vision for 4 years. Now the vision changes each election.

By: Anonymous on 8/5/08

And who do you think that Mayor should be Pray tell?

Insider: We all (those not retired or on government pay)understand the way things are and are smart enough to understand what is going on. Unfortunately, it is people such as yourself (Mike Jackson) Realtor and generally unhappy person who fails to see that greed has brought on its own consequences. "It is only $600,000 for a shack within a crappy neighborhood, but hey, I get my %". Don't try to pass the buck that quickly. Take some of the blame on yourself. Greed begets greed, hate begets hate. This City needs alot of healing….

WE need people who are willing and have the time to throw a hat into the ring. Atascadero needs you. We have very few choices for the up coming City Council election. We also need an all new council except for our newest member Ellen Beraud. Jerry Clay has served for a long time and it's time for him to retire. He has strong emotionally driven opinions(primarily an obsession over the Luna supporters) and no longer acts in the best interest of Atascadero. Roberta Fonzi will be running but the problem is that Al Fonzi is far too radical and his mouth is interpreted as speaking for Roberta. The guy scares me and is a fire fighter who wants a WM so that he and his buddies can get a raise. They already announced (more than once) that they want a raise and that WM sales tax will achieve that goal. This is disgusting considering the pay scale and all the benefits they receive and the fact that they live here in this beautiful city and already earn far more than the average wage per capita for Atascadero. Then there is this new guy from New York City, Len who is an attorney, that’s three strikes and he's out – new in town (too new)-from NY City and an attorney. He is also far too assuming to think he understands our situation. He hasn't done his homework and is too arrogant to realize that he doesn't know what he thinks he knows. Bob Kelley might run for election and he is actually far more reasonable and objective than I had previously thought. Let this be a lesson for all when the realators and developers "aren't" making it everyone looses except the retired and government workers. No comments allowed from retired individuals or anybody whos pay comes through any form of goverment please. You will feel it too, its just takes longer and your not bright enough to realize it.

To, Give Cheryl a break –

That was a very mean post. But actually, it's not as mean as what Cheryl and her group did to Mike and Ellen.

Regardless, I'd like to think that most of us are smarter than that. It's sad that we can't work together and have respectful dialog. Just think with all this energy we might actually get something valuable accomplished if we had a little respect for each other including all our council members and servants.

Cheryl Burbach is obviously very uncomfortable about all her nasty lies and unbecoming behavior in public and at CC meetings. How do I know? Because she has obviously been indulging in a lot of comfort food and now looks like she acted and spoke. An unbecoming "big fat" mealy mouthed liar. What goes around does come around Cheryl.

The only psychotic freaks I ever met in front of Von's was a Jesus Freak on a mega phone and Cheryl Burbach flapping her mouth above the freaks mega phone.

I think anonymous is one of those psychotic anti-walmart freaks we see at Vons.

What a huge loss for the City of Atascadero that George and Mike are not running this fall. Sorry to see you both leave, but I wanted to thank you gentleman for your service as it has been much appreciated. Wishing the best to you and yours.

"Oh wait -perhaps you would need hair and makeup, athough I'm not real sure how you would go about making a p**ck look better…"

The ABA is going to expierence a GREAT BIG BACKFIR. While they were busy protecting the gob's and frustrating everyone Mike was realizing that he could do more if he wasn't in public office. So can George. Now you assholes have the FBI, Mike and George with the freedom to expose you all.

If you are going to make allegations, please provide your proof. Otherwise, you are just trying to spread rumors and lies. Keep it factual!
