Morgan Rafferty, who has served as executive director of ECOSLO since 2006, is alleged to have embezzled more than $33,000 as the volunteer treasurer for Mothers for Peace, another well-known environmental group.
Rafferty appeared before Judge John Trice in Superior Court last week to face one count of grand theft embezzlement. She asked for a public defender and insists she is innocent. Prosecutors claim that Rafferty diverted funds away from Mothers for Peace between January 2007 and October 2008.
If convicted, Rafferty would have to pay restitution and face possible jail time.
